Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as in other organs in the body. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system.

Rheumatoid arthritis does not just affect the joints. Tendons are like ropes which run inside lubricated tubes. The lubricating system is very similar to that in the joints themselves, so it is not surprising that tendons can also be affected by rheumatoid arthritis. In a few people, other parts of the body such as the lungs and the blood vessels may become inflamed.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the joints. It is a disabling and painful inflammatory condition, which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles Continue reading ‘Arthritis Treatment for Old Age’ »

Socrates was once asked by a pupil, this question: “What kind of people shall we be when we reach Elysium?”

And the answer was this: “We shall be the same kind of people that we were here.”

If there is a life after this, we are preparing for it now, just as I am today preparing for my life tomorrow.

What kind of a man shall I be tomorrow? Oh, about the same kind of a man that I am now. The kind of a man that I shall be next month depends upon the kind of a man that I have been this month. Continue reading ‘How to Prepare for Old Age’ »

As you get older, you tend to slow down the pace of your entire life, including how much exercise you get. But considering all the health risks that are a natural part of ageing, it may be more important than ever to increase the level of physical activity in your daily life as you get older. You don’t have to pull weights at the gym or run a marathon. Simplicity is the key to exercising in old age.

Walking

Walking is the simplest and most effective form of exercise. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, and the will to take that first step. Initially, aim for a 15 to 20 minute brisk walk. As your stamina increases, you could lengthen the period and pace of your walks. Always warm up and cool down with simple stretches. To prevent dehydration, drink water before and after your walks. If you don’t like the idea of scheduled exercise, try incorporating walking into other areas of your life – walk to the store instead of taking the car, or use the stairs instead of the elevator. When a person grows old, the body eventually gets weaker, since it has been alive and functioning for the past, let’s say, seventy years. The body is strong enough to stand the test of time, at least for a hundred years or so. Of course, it depends on the person if he/ she maintains their health and body to last them through their golden years. But not all people endure being old. A lot of cases concerning health conditions are showing through old age. Since the body gets weaker, it is more prone to illnesses and diseases that may harm or hurt the person more, hence, they have become more vulnerable to such conditions.

A common type of arthritis that affects people over the age of 60, is osteoarthritis. Since symptoms of arthritis are mainly regarded as joint inflammation, or the feeling of pain or stiffness, this type of arthritis also has the same conditions, but is occurring mostly when of old age. Aches and swelling with weakened motion in the joints, particularly hands, hips, knees or spine are the common symptoms of arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), osteoarthritis is described as the deterioration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint; also bony overgrowth. Basically, this illness is breaking down a person’s cartilage. Since the cartilage is the tissue that is wrapped around the ends of the joint, having this joint disease will make the bones rub together, causing joint damage over time. Today, the trend is to remain sexually active as long as possible because sexual pleasure contributes to both physical and mental health.

Research indicates that many men face erectile dysfunction as they grow older. This is because of lowered testosterone levels, as well as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and prostrate issues. Smoking, lack of exercise, and stress are other contributory factors.

Similarly, women face lowered sexual desire and lubrication problems as they age. They often require increased sexual stimulation to get aroused. Both older men and women find it embarrassing to discuss sexual issues with their doctor. Therefore, they can simply make some changes to their sexual routine for better sex without much effort. “Old age is like a second childhood,” I remember my mom saying, as we found my granny becoming more stubborn and sensitive with age. It rings true for us all. With age, we all become mature and wiser and then again are seen possessing the irrational traits of childhood in us.

With age, the habits and quirks we develop over time become more pronounced. What was overlooked before can often later become overbearing. The nagging, the inflexible attitude, heath issues all make it difficult to care for old parents. Before you lose your temper, remember how much they put up with you during those teenage years or how they did not lose patience when you really crossed the limits. So take a deep breath and deal with them patiently and with love.

Here are some of the common behavioral traits that elderly possess and ways to manage them: Continue reading ‘Dealing with the Annoying Habits of Old age’ »

Vegetables, green and colored have the capacities to retain sharp memory even at old age – say different researches conducted at different Universities of the USA.

Rush University, Chicago conducted a six year study under the leadership of Dr Martha Claire Morris. The 3700 subjects that take vegetables regularly exhibited better mental cognitive skills and memory. The memory of people who take vegetables three times a day was sharper by 40% than people who took vegetables once a day.

Vitamin E, which is common in leafy vegetables enhances mental powers and memory skills. Including different vegetables in daily diet and taking an abundance of vegetables ensures supply of different nutrients to the body. Continue reading ‘Retain Sharp Memory at Old Age With Vegetables’ »

For many, getting old can be a time of loneliness and depression. And, the term “Golden Years” will, most likely, not apply to them. Lack of planning, unsuccessful goals, and medical problems do not make for a happy senior citizen lifestyle. Whatever the reasons, getting old can be lonely, fearful, and depressing time of life.

People rush through life, looking for retirement and the “good” life. They believe they’ll reap wondrous rewards for the blood and sweat for their contributions to big corporate bank rolls. Ah, yes, the day will come when they are without time schedules, deadlines, family expenses, and limited freedom. Oh, it will be a joyous time! But, unfortunately, a bountiful, carefree, rich senior lifestyle is not, usually, recognized by the majority of people.

Some senior citizens find themselves without enough income to provide a roof over their heads, while others realize too late, that retirement arrived before their worldly purchases were paid off, and they are unable to retire. But, if they are gainfully employed, they have hope and abilities to enjoy some similarity of an enjoyable retirement. Continue reading ‘Old Age – Depression, Despair, and Loneliness’ »
