The colon measures approximately five feet in length and is located between the small intestine and the rectum which in turn leads to the anus. In a human, the colon is divided into of four sections: the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, and last of all the sigmoid colon. Partially digested food which is also known as chyme, comes into the colon from the small intestine. In the colon the nutrients, water and salt is absorbed from the food.
Inside the colon there are muscles that contract, this moves the partially digested food along the colon, it then combines with bacteria and mucus and moves downwards into the rectum and it is there where it becomes faeces. Hormones, nerves and impulses control these contractions and problems can arise if they do not work at the correct rate. You could suffer from cramps, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or possibly incomplete stools. Continue reading ‘Function of the Colon – Colon Diseases and Disorders and How to Avoid Them’ »
