LASIK corrective eye surgery is a procedure in which a small incision is made in the cornea, allowing for the top layer of the cornea to be folded back like a flap. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea to improve vision, and the corneal flap is restored to its original position. The difference between traditional LASIK and the all-laser IntraLase method, is that IntraLase uses a laser to make the initial incision, while traditional LASIK uses a blade.
Traditional LASIK
In traditional LASIK procedures, an instrument called a keratome is used to make the initial incision in the cornea. There are two kinds of keratomes: a microkeratome, which is a blade, and an epikeratome, which is a blunt separator. Compared to the use of IntraLase, these incision methods are less accurate, may require a longer healing process, and could result in a less effective procedure. (more…)
Eyes are the most precious part of our body and we have to protect it by every possible means. Everyone does it; they take every possible step to protect their eyes. Protection of eyes involves mainly two things, the glass spectacles and the contact lenses. Both of these eye protection tools are used in large extent all over the world. Both have several advantages over the other; in some cases glass specs are better than the contact lenses and in some cases, the lenses are better than the eye glasses. But, both are equally important to one’s eyes. They protect the human eyes from several problems, diseases, dirt etc. However, it has been observed recently that the use of contact lenses is far more than that of the eye glasses. Lenses and glass specs, both are available in the market in plenty; many well known companies provide these materials of varying range and at varying cost. Firstly, eye glasses are very easy to wear and remove; people do not need to give any extra effort or concentration for that; whereas, inserting and removing a contact lens needs some extra attention and care. Few days of practise is needed to get acquainted with the use of a contact lens. Secondly, a contact lens needs to be cleaned and disinfected regularly using the solution provided with the contact lens. (more…)

Even though they are great for your eyes, all contact lenses aren’t equal. Although your doctor will help you select the best pair for your eyes, you should always know a little bit about the contacts that are available to choose from. All contact lenses can be separated depending on their wearing schedule, purpose, material, and over transparency.
Materials
Contacts can be separated or best determined by their material. Contacts are divided into two main groups – soft and rigid (hard). Soft lenses are gas permeable to a certain extent, being further categorized by the amount of water they contain. Soft contacts can have either a low, which is less than 50 percent moisture, or a high moisture content, which is more than 50 percent. Rigid or hard contacts on the other hand, are much harder in material and are considered to be gas permeable. (more…)
Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. Most often, it’s an age related disease, and is often referred to as Age Related Macular Degeneration. This disease affects over 13 million people in America.

For those people experiencing problems with their eyes, a visit to an eye doctor is very important. Most optometrists offer all the necessary treatments that cover most eye conditions and will deal with the problem both professionally and quickly. It is not absolutely necessary and people will tend to make excuses not to get their eyes looked at. But this is not a good thing. Some eye conditions deteriorate very fast and if the patient had only gone quicker to the specialist, the sight could have been saved or made better. (more…)
