As we get older our bodies become more fragile and we may feel like we don’t have the strength or stamina to get out and exercise. However, even in the face of old age, it’s important to get our bodies moving to preserve and improve our health. Some people over the age of 65 are just giving up, assuming that they’ll never again see the good shape they were in during their younger years. The truth is they are dead wrong!
As our bodies age, we do not recover from physical exertion as quickly as we once did. Do you remember how resilient you were when you were young? Perhaps you could run for miles, play tennis for hours, lift weights or even chop wood in your parents’ backyard! Nowadays, many of those actions might seem unthinkable to you. Challenge yourself to revisit a more youthful state of mind. Sure, you may not be able to run a marathon, swing an ax, or pump iron like you once did, but there are many activities you can still perform to keep your body feeling young and healthy. As mentioned before, it takes a lot longer to recover from stress being placed on your body now than it used to. With that said, you simply have to increase your physical fitness level over time. Even though there are several structured forms of meditation today, the history of meditation goes back to thousands of years. It is believed that primitive man might have discovered the art of meditation, mesmerized by the blazing fires they built and going into a trance even as they watched the fire.
Archaeological findings reveal yogic figures in the Indus Valley Civilization, which proves that meditation existed thousands of years ago. The Indian scriptures dating back more than five thousand years talk about different methods of meditation! As times developed, this became more structured. Throughout its history, meditation has been perceived as religion-related, but now, its health benefits are being recognized and appreciated.
Subsequently the next big thing in the history of meditation is credited to Buddha in 500 BC. He initiated his students and followers into the principles of meditation and this reached out across Asia, becoming very widespread in China, Japan, Tibet, and other Asian countries. Different methods evolved as this happened. Slowly other parts of the world developed their own methods of meditation. Continue reading ‘History Of Meditation – The Age-Old Practice’ »

As you get older, you tend to slow down the pace of your entire life, including how much exercise you get. But considering all the health risks that are a natural part of ageing, it may be more important than ever to increase the level of physical activity in your daily life as you get older. You don’t have to pull weights at the gym or run a marathon. Simplicity is the key to exercising in old age.
Walking
Walking is the simplest and most effective form of exercise. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, and the will to take that first step. Initially, aim for a 15 to 20 minute brisk walk. As your stamina increases, you could lengthen the period and pace of your walks. Always warm up and cool down with simple stretches. To prevent dehydration, drink water before and after your walks. If you don’t like the idea of scheduled exercise, try incorporating walking into other areas of your life – walk to the store instead of taking the car, or use the stairs instead of the elevator. Many of us believe that at a certain age, things go “downhill”. They believe that their nagging back, knee or neck pain is because of old age. They say things like, “I can’t perform squats because my knees hurt, I don’t like to push myself because I’m worried about injuring my back again.” Is this old age or an old way of thinking? Things go “downhill” mainly because we let them, not necessarily because we are getting older. Granted, after our mid-twenties and early thirties, we begin a gradual decline of cardiovascular output, muscular strength, endurance and bone density. The rate of decline is what we have control of, however many individuals believe that they must give in to getting older. Continue reading ‘Old Age or Old Way of Thinking?
