Addiction is an obsession or a compulsion towards anything. It can be a physical dependence or a psychological dependence such as in the case of drug addictions of alcohol, drugs etc. The medical terminology states that addiction is the sate in which the body becomes dependent on something such as drugs for functioning normally and develops a physical dependence on it. It is generally associated with increased drug tolerance with time. And if it becomes unavailable or is removed suddenly from the body there shoots a set of signs and symptoms of withdrawal and anxiety. There can also be a physiological addiction as it may not be any illicit drug which the person is addictive to but the abuse of some prescription drug which has become an addiction with time. Another case of addiction can be psychological dependence. It is an addiction, but is not generally recognized as a problem of addiction by doctors for e.g.: compulsive overeating.

Physical dependence is induced by the sudden discontinuation of the drugs as opiates, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, alcohol or nicotine. Other no recognizable similar additives are beta-blockers, antidepressants etc. Such dependency is the main reason for the continuation and primary motivator of such drugs. It is mainly the ability to induce pleasure that makes the person so addictive initially. And later on the reason changes from attaining pleasure to reduce anxiety caused by its absence. This way it becomes compulsive to use all such additives. Nicotine found loosely in the form of tobacco is one of the major addictive substances ever discovered.

Although detoxification is not a treatment for pain killer addiction, it can help relieve withdrawal symptoms while the patient adjusts to being free of pain killers or other prescription drugs. An opioid-dependent pain patient has improved function with the use of the drug while an opioid-addicted patient does not have improvement. Common side effects and adverse reactions of pain killers are: nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis (contraction of the pupil), orthostatic hypotension (blood pressure drops upon sudden standing) — often happens when arising too fast when getting out of bed in the morning, urinary retention, constipation and fecal impaction.

Addiction to pain killers is an escalating problem today, especially the abuse of opioid pain killers. There are a number of effective treatment options to treat pain killer addiction to prescription opioids and to help manage the sometimes severe withdrawal symptoms that can accompany sudden stopping of pain killers or drugs. Less common side effects and adverse reactions of pain killers are: confusion, hallucinations, delirium, hives, itching, hypothermia, bradycardia (slow heart rate), tachycardia (rapid heart rate), raised intracranial pressure, ureteric or biliary spasm, muscle rigidity and flushing.

Addiction, in medical terms is a condition in which a human body depends on something for its normal functioning, which further leads to physical dependence. Addiction triggers as a mental issue and proceeds to a physical reliance. In such a state a person tends to rely on a typical substance or a drug that seems to give him relief. An escalated drug tolerance is what we know as addiction. One can even get addicted to prescribed drugs; it need not necessarily be due to drug abuse.

It is quite tough a job to answer whether all drugs are addictive or not, it depends on how one defines addiction. Some feel that psychological dependence on a drug or any other substance is addiction. It can be anything. Some people are inclined towards these things and feel that they cannot live without the influence of the substance. This is more of problem with the person who is using it than the substance or drug itself. Dependence is after all a human nature; we cannot blame a drug just because we depend on it. This has more to do with the mental state of one’s mind than the physical. Continue reading ‘Are All Drugs Addictive?’ »

There are two types of drug detox people look for when they search for how to detox on the web. The first one involves drug testing and trying to fool an employment or work place test so you can do drugs and keep working. This is not what this article is about. “Rehab is for quitters”. I saw it on a t-shirt the other day. A clever little play on words that pokes fun at addiction. I don’t think it’s funny, but then I’m here on the front lines.

What is rehab anyway? What does it mean to go to rehab? What is it like there? What happens? Who needs it? Nowadays most people have heard of, or seen the television show Celebrity Rehab. I admit I have never watched a whole episode, just a few minutes here and there, as that was all I could take. In the clip I saw, a counsellor had locked herself in her office crying, while a man having obvious trouble with his facial muscles and his ego (he wanted his mp3 player), yelled at her through the locked door. Chaos and drama abounding, what the addict loves.

On the other end of the spectrum is the government run ’spin dry’. The justice system often offers a choice of jail or rehab. Government funded treatment centers are filled with people not really interested in getting clean and sober, and drug use abounds there. British Columbia’s choice to move to the Harm Reduction Model means that if you use or drink while in government rehab, you don’t have to leave. Imagine the chaos and drama. The person who really wants to be free of his or her addiction has a lot of competition for attention.

Treatment options for pain killer addiction include: medications, such as methadone and LAAM (levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol), and behavioral counseling; usually, the patient is medically detoxified before any treatment approach is begun. Less common side effects and adverse reactions of pain killers are: confusion, hallucinations, delirium, hives, itching, hypothermia, bradycardia (slow heart rate), tachycardia (rapid heart rate), raised intracranial pressure, ureteric or biliary spasm, muscle rigidity and flushing. Many chronic pain patients may be under-treated as a result of doctors who are trying to gain control over pain killer addiction, they report.

Physical dependence on a drug suggests that sudden stopping of the drug may result in negative consequences. “Just Say No” as the popular anti drug campaign goes is one of the most difficult things to do for a person looking for some respite. The drugs don’t talk back, they don’t leave you, they don’t use you are some of the popular disbeliefs that drug users harbor, making it a dangerous addiction. This article deals with understanding the causes of drug abuse, symptoms and signs and some treatments that could be of use.

Causes of Drug Abuse:

• History of mental illness: drugs are sometimes used by people with mental disorders and in some cases even worsen already existing mental illness. They can even create new illnesses.
• Family History: it has not been completely ascertained that genetics and environment play an important role in drug abuse, but if you have a family history of addiction then you are at a higher risk of abusing drugs.
• Physical Pain: illegal drugs and pain medication, like heroin taken without any medical supervision can become addictive.
• Peer Pressure: one of the largest reasons is peer pressure, as if you are with people who are doing drugs then you are tempted to and many times pressured to try these drugs.

With painkiller addiction, the number one question we are asked at our rehab centers is, “I can get off painkillers, but how do I STAY off?”

Just getting off addiction to prescription pain meds can be gruesome. If the addict tries to simply stop using and, without help, just grit his teeth and tough it out, the withdrawal symptoms can tear him up. It tears up everyone around him too.

Recently, a very concerned father called about his 27 year old daughter. She has had two back surgeries for which multiple pain medications have been prescribed. You guessed it, she has become very dependent on them. Continue reading ‘Detox Rehab For Painkiller Addiction’ »
