Prostate cancer is a very real health hazard for men. About sixteen percent of all men in the USA will be affected by prostate cancer during their life, that is one man out of every six. Of those affected by cancer of the prostate about seventeen percent will die of this disease, that is one out of every thirty five men in the USA.

Scientific studies have shown that men who consume fish or use fish oil supplements can reduce these percentages and improve their health outlook. They can reduce the possibility of prostate cancer and where cancer of the prostate is diagnosed they can reduce the growth of tumors and extend their life expectancy by eating fish regularly or using Omega 3 rich fish oil supplements. A reduction of the occurrence of cancer of the prostate and metastatic prostate cancer was associated with eating more fish or using fish oil supplements.

The potential incidence of prostate cancer is related to several factors including:

* Age – Cancer of the prostate generally occurs in men over sixty years of age.
* Men who have inherited a variant of the COX-2 gene that makes them more likely to contact cancer of the prostate
* Obesity – Overweight is a definite factor affecting the occurrence of cancer of the prostate
* African American are more likely to contract prostate cancer than other groups

In the study referred to over forty seven thousand men were studied. Using a validated food frequency questionnaire their dietary intake was studied. The study then followed up for a further twelve years. During this time about five percent of the men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Over twenty four percent of these cases were advanced cancer of the prostate including eleven percent who had metastatic prostate cancer.

The most encouraging part of this study was that men who ate oily fish more than three times a week had a significant reduction in the occurrence of cancer of the prostate and the greatest reduction in metastatic cancer. Each increase of the daily intake by half a gram of marine fatty acid was related with a twenty four percent decrease in the risk of metastatic cancer.

Other studies on laboratory mice have also shown definite beneficial relationships between the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil and the reduction of the risk of prostate cancer.

Fatty or oily fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines are rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are essential for the good health of the human body but cannot be manufactured by the body.

They must be provided from the diet. Fish are the most common source of these Omega 3 fats. Their benefit for men in the fight against prostate cancer is clear.

Including more fish or Omega 3 fish oil supplements in the diet can be a long term program against the effects of prostate cancer. Where fish are not freely available or where there is no desire to eat more fish then an Omega 3 fish oil supplement in capsule form can provide the Omega 3 fats required for good prostate health. Omega 3 fish oil supplements also have demonstrated health benefits for heart and the nervous system.

Keep your prostate in good health by taking an Omega 3 fish oil supplement regularly. Such a program is not a quick fix but a long term investment in good health.

Age is likely the most important overall factor associated with breast cancer risk. Breast cancer risk increases in the older post-menopausal population. For this reason, all breast cancer screening recommendations are based primarily on age. Obesity, however, may be the single most preventable risk factor associated with breast cancer. With the dramatic increase in obesity in the U.S., this may be the number one reason for a persistently high incidence in breast cancer. Other physical factors also play some roles in breast cancer risk. These include height, body shape, breast size, and mammographic density. These physical factors are summarized below.

Body Weight and Breast Cancer: A woman’s body weight does affect her risk of breast cancer but the effect is different for premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer. Most studies have found that heavier women (weighing more than 175 pounds) have a lower risk of breast cancer before menopause and higher risk of breast cancer after menopause, compared to thinner women (weighing less than 130 pounds). Since 80% of breast cancers occur after menopause, the negative effects of obesity far outweigh the beneficial effects. The results are the same whether body weight is examined directly or if body mass index is used to adjust for the effects of height on body weight.

Body Shape and Breast Cancer: Several human studies have found that women who carry more of their body fat on their stomach (apple shaped) have higher rates of postmenopausal breast cancer compared to women with more of their body fat around their hips (pear shaped). This seems to be true regardless of women’s body weight. The relationship of the location of fat on the body and premenopausal breast cancer risk has not been clearly determined

Height and Breast Cancer: A woman’s height has been associated with breast cancer risk in many studies. Taller women (5′ 9″ or taller) have a small increase in risk of both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer compared to shorter women (5′ 3″ or shorter). A person’s height is determined by the interaction of genetics and nutrition. How height might affect breast cancer risk is unclear.

Breast Size and Breast Cancer: There is a popular belief that small breasts are at lower risk of breast cancer. This theory has been used to explain why women with breast implants have a smaller risk of breast cancer. However, most studies have found no association between breast size and breast cancer risk. One study, however, did find an increase in the risk of breast cancer among lean women with larger breasts. In this study, more than 4,000 women were grouped according to their bra size before childbirth. Women who were lean (chest size less than 34 inches) and had larger breasts (size B, C or larger cups) were at higher risk of post menopausal breast cancer relative to women of the same chest size with an A or smaller cup size. Women with other chest sizes had no association between breast cup size and breast cancer risk. More studies are needed to confirm these results

Mammographic density: Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that breast density as measured on mammograms is a significant risk factor for breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer associated with the highest category of density has been estimated to be much greater than in the lowest density category. Mammographic density appears to be predictive for developing invasive cancer after DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). Increasing density is associated with increasing breast cancer risk in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, with the effect persisting for ten years after mammography. Mammographic density has also been shown to be a risk factor for breast cancer in women with a family history of the disease. Mammographic density is probably important even in patients who are BRCA gene positive. In fact, mammographic density may actually have a substantial heritable component.

Surgery is typically the first line of assault against breast cancer. This part makes clear the various types of surgery.

As a woman with early-stage breast cancer (DCIS or Stage I, IIA, IIB, or IIIA) you might be able to decide which type of breast surgery to have. Frequently, your selection is between breast-sparing surgery (surgery that removes the cancer and leaves most of the breast) and a mastectomy (surgery that gets rid of the whole breast). Examination demonstrates that women with early-stage breast cancer who have breast-sparing surgery together with radiation therapy live as long as those who have a mastectomy. The majority women with the disease will lead long, healthy lives subsequent to treatment.

Treatment for breast cancer typically starts some weeks following diagnosis. In these weeks, you ought to meet with a surgeon, learn the details regarding your surgery options, and consider what is significant to you. Afterward decide which type of surgery to have.

Women with breast cancer have lots of treatment choices. These consist of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological therapy. These alternatives are explained below. But lots of women accept more than one kind of treatment.

Cancer treatment is either local therapy or systemic therapy:

- Local therapy: Surgery and radiation therapy are local treatments. They take out or obliterate cancer in the breast. When breast cancer has extended to other areas of the body, local therapy might be utilized to manage the disease in those certain parts.

- Systemic therapy: Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological therapy are systemic treatments. They come into the bloodstream and obliterate or manage cancer all through the body. A number of women with breast cancer have systemic therapy to shrink the tumor prior to surgery or radiation. Others have systemic therapy following surgery and/or radiation to put off the cancer from returning. Systemic treatments are employed for cancer that has extended too.

Judgments in relation to surgery rely on several factors. You and your doctor will settle on the type of surgery that’s most suitable for you based on the stage of the cancer, the “personality” of the cancer, and what is satisfactory to you in terms of your long-term peace of mind.

However, there are some types of breast surgery. Your physician could give details the benefits and risks of each type, besides to answering some questions or concerns you might have before surgery.

All women wish to avoid cancer, and breast cancer in particular because of extreme consequences that in modern treatment, usually involves radical surgery and chemotherapy.

Regrettably, breast cancer is all too common and one of the most serious causes of women’s fatalities through disease in Australia and the US. Contemporary methods of orthodox medicine are no guarantee of a permanent cure. In fact it is generally considered that a patient has a limited future following the most severe treatment. There has been no real success in curing by chemicals and radiation in spite of efforts in research to find an answer.

In contrast, the naturopathic approach is to encourage the natural powers of healing to do their best by reducing the negative factors that result in storage of toxins in the body. If left to accumulate, these in time can irritate the cells into abnormal behaviour and lead to cancer. In conjunction with improving elimination of toxins, we must provide the finest nutritional substances needed to restore balance and perfect health. This constituted the simple principle that can be applied to all diseases, including treatment of cancer.

However, the most obvious approach is to effectively prevent cancer by abiding by all the natural health rules that are required for excellent body function. There is no doubt that the answer is to turn our minds to identify these factors and apply them through our personal self discipline.

We are all aware of the social and environmental factors that can cause cancer, from mobile phones to artificial foods, faulty nutrition and the many carcinogens that exist in our surroundings. So it is an uphill battle to avoid all the negatives entirely. But we must try.

Our efforts should include -

- nutrition is important to include organic food and vital supplements
- avoid chemical ingestion and pollution in the environment
- satisfy the body’s need for regular exercise
- adequate breathing and oxygenation of the blood
- freedom from psychological stress
- need for a vital positive mental interest in life

In regard to prevention of breast cancer in particular there are another three very important factors to consider in order to maximize the chances of avoiding the disease.

Firstly, it is necessary to balance hormonal function and cease taking the oral contraceptive Pill. The Pill is now well known to increases risk of breast cancer and cause mental depression.

Secondly, daily exercise that includes appropriate movements that stimulate circulation of blood and lymph around the underarms to involve the arm and shoulder muscles. There are many specific yoga exercises and asanas that can assist with this.

Thirdly to cease the use of suppressant deodorants that force perspiration and the toxins that should be eliminated from the body, to linger in the area of breasts and armpits.

To regularly use self massage is also helpful. Seek further advice from your naturopath or yoga teacher.

Remember to have faith in the fact that the powers of nature are unlimited but we must do our part to allow them to succeed in maintaining our health and well being.

Sally Janssen has qualification and many years of experience in her dual professions of yoga teaching and as a naturopath. She is renowned for her skills and healing techniques of Hatha Yoga as she is for her wisdom and methods to achieve mental health through Raja Yoga. Both are offered in her sites -

Roche: novel Herceptin formulation promises greater convenience

Having stepped up lifecycle management for its leading breast cancer monoclonal antibody, Herceptin, Roche hopes to encourage uptake of a more convenient formulation of the drug. This strategy could help to conserve its share of an increasingly competitive market, but may be challenging to implement due to concerns over compliance and financial incentives to prescribe intravenous cancer drugs. ( http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=68637&rt=F-Hoffmann-La-Roche-Ltd-PharmaVitae-Profile.html )

Roche has invested roughly CHF190m ($183m) at two production sites to manufacture devices that will allow patients to self-administer a subcutaneous formulation of Herceptin (trastuzumab; Roche/Genentech/Chugai).

One site will supply the devices for a Phase III study which could support approval of the subcutaneous formulation. In this study, 552 patients with stage I-IIIc breast cancer will receive chemotherapy in combination with either subcutaneous or intravenous Herceptin before surgery, followed by 10 three-weekly infusions of subcutaneous or intravenous Herceptin.

Herceptin is a monoclonal antibody directed towards the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2), which is over-expressed in approximately 25% of the breast cancer population. In its intravenous formulation, Herceptin has established itself as a leading treatment for HER-2-positive breast cancer, both for patients with early-stage (stage I-III) and metastatic (stage IV) forms of the disease. In 2008, global sales of the drug totaled $4.7 billion.

Herceptin’s current intravenous formulation requires patients to receive the drug in hospital via a one-hour infusion. The subcutaneous formulation (developed in partnership with Halozyme Therapeutics) would increase convenience, allowing patients to self-administer the drug at home via a five-minute infusion. This is important given that Herceptin is administered for up to a year in early-stage breast cancer. Additionally, this would help to reduce costs associated with patient hospitalization and could improve the drug’s side-effect profile by reducing infusion reactions.

Roche will hope that these factors increase brand loyalty and protect Herceptin’s market share against potentially fierce competition from GlaxoSmithKline’s oral HER-2 inhibitor, Tykerb (lapatinib), which is approved for metastatic breast cancer and is currently in Phase III trials for early-stage HER-2-positive breast cancer. Furthermore, switching patients to a subcutaneous formulation could help insulate against potential competition from biosimilar versions of intravenous Herceptin. As the lucrative monoclonal antibody market approaches maturity, such lifecycle management activities are likely to become increasingly common.

However, Roche could find it challenging to encourage uptake of subcutaneous Herceptin because it will make it more difficult for physicians to ensure patient compliance. Indeed, patient compliance can be a problem for some orally administered anticancer drugs. In the US, financial incentives for oncologists to prescribe intravenous drugs could further restrict uptake of the subcutaneous formulation. The ongoing Phase III study may therefore have to show that the more convenient subcutaneous formulation also has superior efficacy in order to drive appreciable uptake.

When it comes to reducing your risk of developing colon cancer, there is a lot of good news. This is a type of cancer that usually develops slowly, which means that there is time to take steps to prevent it or at least to detect it before it becomes serious.

One of the best ways to prevent colon cancer is through a healthy diet.

Eat more vegetable and fruits

If you eat three or more servings of vegetables a day, you can lower you risk of developing colon cancer. It is not clear why, but it appears that the folic acid in vegetables helps keep ceels healthy. Generally speaking, a serving is about half a cup of chopped vegetables or a cup of leafy greens.

Fruits and veggies supply a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, and also contain cancer-fighting substances known as phytochemicals.

After convening an expert panel that reviewed hundreds of epidemiological studies on dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, the American Institute of Cancer Research found overwhelming evidence that fruit and vegetable consumption reduces the risk of cancer.

Eat more bread, beans and bananas

Experts recommend eating more of the types of foods that will fill you up, while at the same time, providing a variety of vitamins, minerals, protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber. Such foods include whole grains found in breads, cereals, pasta, and rice; legumes, such as beans and peas; plantains, such as bananas; and roots and tubers, such as sweet potatoes.

Look for foods that have been minimally processed and that contain few refined sugars; such foods are generally the best sources of nutrients and other beneficial substances. For example, whole-grains wheat breadis better than white, and bran cereal is better than cerals with frosting or that taste like cereal.

Eat less red meat

If you have more than one serving of red meat(beef, pork, lamb or venison) per day, you are at increased risk of colon cancer. Meat appears to contain substances that can turn normal cell cancerous. The best way to eat less meat per week is to find substitutes: chicken, fish, pasta or vegetables.

Cook meats safely

The way that meats are cooked is also important. Known or suspected carcinogens are formed when meat or fish is exposed directly to flame or intense heat, as typically happens when food is broiled, roasted, fried or grilled. High temperatures and flames induce chemical reactions as oil and fat drip down, forming new compounds that splatter back up and stick to the surface of the meat. Epidemiological studies have reported that people who frequently eat meats cooked at high temperatures may increase their risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

Fortunately, this particular cancer risk can be controlled and should be kept in perspective. It is important that foods, and especially meats, be cooked thoroughly to kill any bacterial for people trying to reduce their risk of heart disease, eating broiled or grilled food is often recommended. To reduce your risk of cancer, don’t regularly eat meat that has been overcooked or charred. Eating such foods on an occasional basis won’t greatly increase your risk for stomach and colorectal cancers.

There are other strategies as well. Grill vegetables instead of meat. (Because the vegetables don’t drip fat, cooking them doesn’t create the compounds discussed above.) Choose lean cuts of meat or trim off the fat and skin before cooking. Turn the meat often while cooking, and use tongs or a spatula, which does not puncture the meat.

Choose broiling or grilling, where drippings fall away from the meat and may not splatter up as much, over pan frying-where the meat is in direct contact with both high heat and fat drippings, resulting in the formation of more carcinogens on the meat surface. Or precooked meats by boiling, steaming or microwaving to lessen the amount of time spent grilling.

Limit your intake of cured meats

Processed cold cuts, hams and hotdogs contain nitrites and nitrates as preservatives. Some studies report that diets high in cured meats may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, but others disagree.

So what should you do? The strategy best calculated to reduce your risk of cancer would be to eat cured meats only in moderation. It is unlikely that the occasional hotdog or ham sandwich will materially affect your cancer risk.

Limit your alcohol intake

Alcohol consumption moderately increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer.

The correct treatment of cancer is a matter for almost endless debate, simply because no one knows how to treat cancer currently. We deplore increasingly common creature ” The Triumphalistic Oncologist”, so eloquently caricaturized in the editorial with this title in the journal Surgery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics, his attitude of mind seems to be that in repudiate any advance that has gone before.

Such as self serving approach is clearly ludicrous it deliberately ignores the established fact that conventional treatments of cancer , based on either scientific fact or imperial discoveries, can cure at least one third of all cancer patients, essentially controlling their disease to such an extend as to given then normal life expectancy. The real objective is to see whether this successful fraction can be even marginally increased by the correct use of all therapeutic resources. Every day, 1100 citizens of the US die of cancer. If it were possible to decrease this number by even one tenth, this would mean the saving of 110 lives a day, 770 a week, 3300 a moth, and 40,000 in the course of the year.

We firmly believe that supplemental ascorbate used correctly alongside conventional methods of treating cancer has very much greater potential than that. It seems abundantly clear that ascorbic acid is directly involved in many of the natural mechanism that protect an individual against cancer. Cancer itself, as we have seen, depletes the body’s stores of ascorbate and is almost always associated with some measurable impairment of its immune mechanism. Therefore, as a matter or principle, no matter what form of established cancer treatment is employed, active steps should be taken to ensure that he patients ascorbate reserves are constantly kept high in order to allow this protective immune system to function always at maximum efficiency.

The value of surgery in the treatment of cancer is beyond dispute. If the tumor is still localized to an organ or tissue that can be safely excised without undue risk to the patient, such a step is undoubtedly the treatment of choice.

“Cut it out and throw it away” may seem to be a most primitive and unsophisticated approach, but it is still far and away the most effective treatment we have.

Our bodies don’t get cancer; our bodies make cancer. That is we have made it ourselves. How did we accomplish that you may ask? Simply by not respecting the laws of Mother Nature. It’s the way we are now living that’s causing so much of it now days. Cancer is well understood and it is not some dreaded disease that science can’t fathom. Its cause is the result of the violation of natural laws.

What our medical system wants us to believe is it’s not our fault and there is nothing we could have done to prevent it. That is not so! The facts are cancer has been growing in your body for many years, and it’s you that has caused it. In most cases it takes about 10 years before it’s of sufficient size to be detected and that means your cancer has been under construction for a long time.

If you’re interested here is a recipe for making cancer;

Expose your self to large amounts of radiation in the form of x-rays and ct scans.

Make sure most of your food is processed.

Eating cancer causing food which contains chemical preservatives, e.g. salami.

Eating lots of refined sugar which is cancer cells natural food.

Avoiding anti-cancer food which is fresh food in its natural state.

Using too many toxic chemicals, many of them in personal care products.

Avoiding natural sunlight.

Live a sedentary lifestyle.

So when a doctor tells a patient there was nothing they could have done to stop the cancer that is not true. A doctor is only repeating what he knows and they don’t know how cancer is made or even the causes of it. Cancer is a degenerative disease and all degenerative diseases can be reversed, it is never too late to do something about it.

Cancer is a modern day problem, there was very little of it 40 to 50 years ago. It is only man and the animals he controls that are troubled by cancer. It is a complex disease and man will never fully understand it and he doesn’t need to. All you have to do if you’re dealing with cancer is to just rely on nature to help you remove it. Nature produces the perfect food for humans which is our medicine and all you have to do is to eat it. Nature provides the cure for cancer.

To remove cancer once it has been diagnosed you must respect the laws of Mother Nature and eat and live as we are supposed to.

Here is the recipe for removing cancer;

Eat a plant based diet.

Make sure the food you eat is fresh and no one has interfered with it.

Get a little exercise everyday, it’s important.

Avoid chemicals, we are surrounded by them.

Have a positive outlook.

Remember your body strives to heal itself automatically every single day. What you need to do to assist it is to remove the barrier that’s been stopping it from healing. A strict natural diet and other simple lifestyle changes will do this.

In the last article, I discussed how I found out I had breast cancer. I talked about how my family and I reacted. In this article, I will discuss the treatments and how we all pulled through the year from Hell.

Next Step: Lymph Nodes
After having the lumpectomy and finding out it was cancer, my doctor told me we need to check my lymph nodes. First, I had to go get a simple scan to determine where they were. What she didn’t tell me was I would need to lie perfectly still while they shoved a needle into my breast and squirted painful nuclear medicine in.

It seems, to locate the lymph nodes, someone has got to insert nuclear medicine into the site. Then they use a machine to see where the medicine goes. This takes a few minutes but is very freaky thing. Then, they mark you up for the surgery the next day.

The day of the surgery, I was lucky enough to discover, I had to get metal wire stuck into my breast so the surgeon could locate the lymph nodes. However, the whole thing was easy and I got to go home the same day.

No lymph node involvement for me.

Mastectomy vs. Radiation
My next big decision was to decide between mastectomy and radiation. I did some studying and found out that if I wanted reconstruction, then I would need a mastectomy. The thing with radiation was that if it didn’t work, then I would not be able to have reconstruction later on.

I decided for a bilateral mastectomy because I wanted both sides to look the same. I was also going to have reconstruction at the same time. (Well, at least I thought I was. Turns out reconstruction is a year long process.)

Bilateral Mastectomy Here I Come
The big day came and I had both breasts removed and in their place expanders. It seems, when they take every little bit of your breast tissue, you need expanders put in. Expanders are hard silicone that stretches out the skin slowly.

Every two weeks, you go in and get a little more saline put into the expanders to stretch you out more. This is done by inserting a needle into the breast, through a port in the expander, and filling it up. This process hurts!

Anyway, I stayed in the hospital for 5 days. This is great considering some women have to go home the next day due to insurance policy. My doctor gave me an anesthesia thing to press when I felt pain. This meant I did not need pain medication in the hospital because it removed the pain completely. It was great.

Full Time Care Needed
The doctor told me I would need someone to take care of me when I got home. We just didn’t know how much care that would be. I was stuck on my back not able to move my arms. My husband had to cook, clean and take care of me. In addition, he had to squeeze my drainage tubes to make sure I was draining properly.

If I was to move, it could cause infection. This is not something anyone wanted and was very difficult. However, the last surgery proved the hardest.

Chemotherapy Next
In the next article, I will discuss the chemotherapy and what no one warned us about.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber. It can be definitely identified simply with a special kind of microscope. There are many types of asbestos fibers. Formerly, asbestos was added to a range of products to reinforce them and to give heat insulation and fire resistance.

Asbestos-related lung disease happened at very high rates to the middle of the 20th century, when patients who were uncovered decades earlier to asbestos finally developed disease. British asbestos workers were among the first who were detected to suffer lung cancer related to asbestos.

Like mesothelioma, the latency phase between asbestos exposure and the growth of asbestos related lung cancer may be two, three, four, or even more decades. Very frequently, asbestos-related cancer sufferers also suffer from asbestosis, a scarring of the lung tissue caused by asbestos exposure. Approximately one in seven people with asbestosis will ultimately expand cancer of lung.

The danger of lung cancer and mesothelioma raises with the number of fibers inhaled. The risk from inhaling asbestos fibers is greater too if you smoke. While the majority asbestos-associated cancers are related to the intensity and extent of exposure, reports in medical journals have related some mesotheliomas to short exposure phases, on the order of months.

Many studies have attempted to decide whether asbestosis is present in all cases of asbestos-related lung cancer. While this would make simpler the pathology determination once the diagnosis was completed-and potentially help in treatment decisions-this has not showed to be a reliable pattern in these cases.

Once the existence of any of these lung abnormalities is recognized, any tests may be necessary to establish if cancer of lung is present, how far it has progressed, and what medications are indicated. Frequently, some are used in conjunction to give a complete picture.

While imaging tests like A Computed Tomography Scan (CT scan or CAT scan), Positron emission tomography (PET) scans and ultrasound give helpful information, lung cancer, asbestos-related or otherwise, cannot be diagnosed without examination of the abnormal tissue or tumor. This necessitates a biopsy, or physical removal of tissue for examination. Physicians typically prefer to use the least invasive methods first, resorting to more invasive if a diagnosis cannot be attained.
