In my personal experience as a 10-year breast cancer survivor and from watching others, it seems that as time passes after a cancer diagnosis the worries and fears about a recurrence lessen. Ten years out, I now only find myself triggered and fearful again when a friend or loved one has a recurrence, I develop a mysterious symptom or just before my yearly mammogram. But if you’re a little closer to your original diagnosis, it’s not uncommon to still be afraid. It’s like you’re doing the limbo, between the world of the living and the world of the dying. It’s a dance that requires all the agility that doing the limbo does. It asks us to maintain an optimistic belief in our future, yet not deny that death will come one day. And it takes tremendous courage to plan for a future that still feels uncertain.

If practiced, the following tips will help you reduce and lessen your fears about a cancer recurrence. They’re given with the personal knowledge that it can be extremely challenging to manage this fear. But it can be done and has been done by many, the same way you get to Carnegie Hall: practice, practice, practice.

The first thing to do to reduce your fears of recurrence is to monitor your thoughts. As a life, business and results coach, I encourage everyone I meet, survivor or not, to monitor their thoughts. Because success in anything in life comes from how we communicate to others, but more importantly how we communicate to ourselves, by the thoughts we routinely think. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) strongly supports finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, while improving the lives of those living with cancer. As a cancer survivor, I know firsthand how difficult living with cancer can be. I have personally benefited from the many patient services the LLS offers, such as, support groups, financial support, information on the latest news in treatment, free materials, and patient education programs.

The LLS has helped make my first year going through this life changing event, a little less challenging. I have been able to take part in a monthly support group and be among others going through the same thing, sort through my feelings, and learn coping techniques like guided imagery, and art therapy. I receive financial support to help with my on-going additional medical expenses. I have found the LLS website to be an outstanding resource with a multitude of valuable information and resources. And I have been fortunate enough to take part in a patient education program on employee work related issues and understanding your rights, along with, a cooking class on eating healthy. Researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have discovered that the HPV vaccine may be effective in preventing breast cancer, which affects over a million women a year worldwide.

In a new article published in the British Journal of Cancer, the experts reveal that they conducted studies of breast cells and found that there were several strains of HPV present which are known to have a high risk of initiating cancer of the cervix.

A team from UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, led by visiting professor James Lawson, declared that there was a presence of high-risk HPV in the nuclei of breast cancer epithelial cells in 21 per cent of 14 invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) breast cancer specimens. A symptom is an indication of disease, illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body. Symptoms are felt or noticed by a person, but may not easily be noticed by anyone else. For example, chills, weakness, achiness, shortness of breath, and a cough may be symptoms of pneumonia. A sign is also an indication that something is not right in the body. But signs are defined as things that can be seen by a doctor, nurse, or other health care professional. Fever, rapid breathing rate, and abnormal breathing sounds heard through a stethoscope may be signs of pneumonia.

Having one symptom or sign may not give enough information to suggest a cause. For example, a rash in a child could be a symptom of a number of things including poison ivy, an infectious disease like measles, an infection limited to the skin, or a food allergy. But if the rash is seen along with other signs and symptoms like a high fever, chills, achiness, and a sore throat, then a doctor can get a better picture of the illness. In many cases, a patient’s signs and symptoms do not give enough clues by themselves for the doctor to figure out the cause of an illness. Then medical tests, such as x-rays, blood tests, or a biopsy may be needed.

Chances are, that you haven’t heard much about hydrogen peroxide. Of course if you’re a women, you probably might have, even if you have absolutely no interest in chemistry, much less biochemistry. Still, you must have come across hydrogen peroxide, at least at your hair salon. The male population on the other hand, is pretty much oblivious about HP. But what if I told you, that hydrogen peroxide is most powerful, most beneficial oxidizer, cure all known to mankind.

Then why have just a few heard about it if it’s that miraculous, one might ask.

Mainly because of two reasons. It’s cheap and it’s highly effective. Who on earth would promote anything cheap and effective now days? Well, call me stupid, but I will. Lets see first, what is hydrogen peroxide, and where can we find it besides hair salons and drag stores. Hydrogen peroxide is a molecule containing two atoms of hydrogen and two atoms of oxygen.

If we take a look at its chemical formula, which is H2O2, we’ll see that, it resembles much of water H2O,with an extra atom of oxygen attached to it. In fact that’s exactly what it is. This extra atom of oxygen is just loosely attached to the molecule of water, and once in contact with the other surface, it becomes nascent, or active oxygen. This active oxygen has healing powers. Every cell in human body needs oxygen, or we dye, it’s that simple. On the other hand, once certain area of our body starts lacking oxygen, it becomes acidic, starts to putrefy, it gets sick and diseased, and it dyes. Is it so important to get a second opinion when you have been diagnosed with cancer? The answer is yes and there are several reasons. Some of the doctors do not encourage their patients to seek second opinions. These doctors may be afraid of losing revenue or threatened by having their patients believe some other doctors are more knowledgeable, or they just may not border consulting with other physicians. Although you trust your physicians, the intent of a cancer diagnosis demands that you feel 100% confident with the diagnosis and your treatment plan before proceeding any further. Obviously, a second opinion that concurs with the fist can give you up most confidence.

Having said so, although conformation is conforming, a second opinion can also add to or conflict with information you may have already received. However, a conflicting data can setup productive dialogue that leads to a more appropriate treatment plan and a better understanding of your situation. Continue reading ‘Cancer Second Opinion’ »

New studies are showing that aspirin can help prevent colon cancer, in addition to other diseases. Patients who are already taking an aspirin a day for heart concerns may actually be benefiting themselves in other ways. Although it is not proven yet, there are several new studies that show that aspirin may actually help to prevent colon cancer. For patients who already have colon cancer, studies are also showing that taking an aspirin a day can help along with their other prescribed treatments.

It is too early for complete recommendations as the side effects of this type of therapy are still being looked into; however, this can be a way that the patients are able to help themselves. Two main studies that are being conducted are:

· Nurses’ Health Study
· Health Professionals’ Follow-Up Study

These were basically observational studies where the researchers merely observed what patients were already doing in their daily routines. Researchers followed approximately 1,300 people for a period of 12 years. Many of the patients had had surgery for colon cancer already and many also receive chemotherapy for the disease. One day when I was feeling tired, I reached for a fresh orange. I had not eaten any fresh fruit in a long while. Immediately upon eating that orange, I felt a surge of energy. Wow, I thought, food really affects my energy level. Later, I happened to be chatting with a man who wanted to recruit me for marketing a certain kind of berry that was supposed to make you super energetic. I thought to myself, that berry juice is expensive and the orange I just ate has the same fantastic qualities. I wondered, do people need to pay a lot for a product to believe in its amazing healthful effects? Simply eating fresh fruits and vegetables will recharge your batteries as well as or better than many “magical cure” food products.

The foods you eat are very important for combating fatigue, especially with the added demands on your time and energy related to cancer in the family. When you feel like you can’t possibly do one more errand or talk to one more doctor, energy foods will give your body and mind a boost, and even make you feel optimistic.
