Many concepts have seen a transformation in past two centuries and one of them is change in moral and cultural values of societies. Use of Alcohol was previously seen as a status symbol, but with time, it turned into a form of addiction for many. Reasons and factors did vary from regions and different cultures.
Unfortunately, it took more time to realise that alcoholism is a drug addiction. “Because we have been led to believe that drug addiction or alcohol addiction is a disease. We have been told that the only way to “recover” is to attend treatment and endless AA, NA meetings for the rest of our lives. ”
Any drug addiction including alcohol addiction is not a disease rather a choice. One does not has to be a passive bystander to an illusory disease of drug addiction or alcohol addiction; one should give up his will; be marked as an alcoholic or “in recovery”; or turn up meetings and treatment for the rest of his/her life!

You may rightfully get upset when you find out someone you love is an addict. You may think that the person chooses to take drugs for fun. Choosing to take drugs is not a choice in the life of an addict. He or she is addicted to drugs and it should be treated like a disease.
Estimates of the total overall costs of substance abuse in the United States exceed half a trillion dollars each year. That includes $181 billion for illicit drugs, $168 billion for tobacco and $185 billion for alcohol. What is important to know though is the cost of drug addiction extends to every citizen in the United States of America. We pay for the drug addiction through family disintegration, loss of employment, failure in school, domestic violence, child abuse, and other crimes.
Drug addiction changes the structure and function of the brain and is frequently referred to as a disease because of these characteristics. The brain’s communication system is disrupted and changed from repeated use of substances and so when the addict stops using drugs, a craving is induced. It is for this very reason that addicts are compelled to do whatever it takes to purchase more drugs; prostitution, theft or other crimes. In fact, most incarcerations are somehow directly or indirectly tied to addiction.

It is most important to stay motivated during the process of recovery. It helps to make a list of benefits, or advantages of quitting the addictive behavior. These should be benefits that are very valuable to you valuable enough to turn your back on the addiction. Setbacks will occur and should be viewed as opportunities to learn.
Coping with the intense urges and cravings is perhaps the greatest challenge for most individuals. In the case of substance abuse in particular, the drug radically alters the brain by literally taking control of certain neuro chemicals. It is important to understand the temporary nature of the urges. During withdrawal, the time that the urge lasts seems endless and unbearable. It helps to actually clock the duration of an urge and see for oneself that it does end. Recovering addicts have reported that urges initially reach a climax in frequency, intensity and duration, but gradually lose their strength and fizzle out.
Some specific techniques for coping with urges are as follows:
Attempt to stand apart from it for a moment and witness it as an outsider, with detachment.
Recall your list of ‘benefits of quitting’
Go back to the task you were performing
Consider the negative fallouts of succumbing to the urge
Completely focus your energies on any other thought or activity
Deprive the urge of your attention. You will find that it tends to disappear gradually.

There is a big difference between getting and staying sober. And while many people suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction think that all they need to do is stop drinking or using and they will be OK, this idea couldn’t be further from the truth. Statistics show that more than 90% of all people who stop drinking or using drugs relapse quickly when they do not create and follow an aftercare recover plan.
Think of it like this; if you broke your leg and there were serious complications that kept you from walking for a very long time, your doctor would prescribe a therapy program to help you regain strength in your leg and help you walk again, and you would defiantly undertake and follow this therapy program, but for the chronic alcoholic and drug addict, one of the ugly effects of this deadly disease makes the alcoholic think he is OK, and doesn’t need help, and even after quitting drinking without aftercare this hideous disease will soon take over and he or she will again drink. Addiction to a drug or to alcohol is an all-consuming compulsion, one which demands attention, almost to the exclusion of all else. It can be a full-time job for the addict. Getting drugs or alcohol and consuming them, then being stoned or drunk occupies a large portion of their time.
In the case of drugs such as heroin or cocaine, using is definitely a morning to night occupation. The addict will wake up and look to see how much drug there is for that day’s consumption. If the supply is low, the planning of how to get more of the drug takes up the morning’s activities. Faked prescriptions, phone calls to borrow money, scams, and other methods of getting the price of drugs together is always first on the to-do list. It appears that segments of the medical community are trying to take their job back – deciding what is best for their patients.
For the past several years the idea of Physician diagnosis leading to correct treatment has gotten lost in the din of TV pharmaceutical commercials.
Relegating a Physician’s role to “Ask your doctor if this drug is right for you†put big Pharma up front and left the Medical Doctor taking the orders and the patients as drug addicts.
Legislative sessions have swarmed with lobbyists for the pharmaceutical companies while the Physicians, less trained in Public Relations have allowed their presence to diminish in the eyes of the community and the law makers.
