Roche: novel Herceptin formulation promises greater convenience

Having stepped up lifecycle management for its leading breast cancer monoclonal antibody, Herceptin, Roche hopes to encourage uptake of a more convenient formulation of the drug. This strategy could help to conserve its share of an increasingly competitive market, but may be challenging to implement due to concerns over compliance and financial incentives to prescribe intravenous cancer drugs. Roche has invested roughly CHF190m ($183m) at two production sites to manufacture devices that will allow patients to self-administer a subcutaneous formulation of Herceptin (trastuzumab; Roche/Genentech/Chugai). Continue reading ‘Roche: novel Herceptin formulation promises greater convenience’ »

There are several different reasons why a drug abuse intervention will save someone’s life, and there should be no hesitation when it comes to whether or not to use an intervention to help someone.

Saves a Life With Drug Abuse Intervention

It is possible for an addict to be physically injured or even killed while trying to purchase their drugs, depending on where that is. The same danger exists for the people around the addict as well. The addict may think that the dealer is their friend, but the criminals that deal drugs are, in no way, a friend to anyone. In that situation, the addict is playing Russian Roulette with their life, even though they may not realize or acknowledge it. The user thinks the drug dealer is a friend. When trouble comes, that “friend” can turn ugly very fast.

Stop The Possibility of Legal Distress or a Police Record

If the addict is ever caught using or carrying anything that suggests use, severe legal trouble and a record will happen. The legal issues will cost money many addicts and their families do not have. On top of the fact the addict may serve prison time, the charges will follow them for the rest of their lives, making it difficult to get a job or even rent a place to live. If prison time has to be served, it can be a traumatic experience and difficult to readjust to society afterward.

Detoxing is ridding your body of the buildup of toxins. These toxins get into your body through eating food, breathing, from the environment around you, and from taking drugs.

Detoxing from drugs involves stopping taking the drug for a start. Once you have done this, your liver and kidneys should begin to do their job…detoxification.

What are the physical symptoms of marijuana detoxing?

Many people insist that there are no physical withdrawal symptoms. This is just not true. If you have been dependent on any drug you will get some withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop using the drug. That is what dependence is all about. Whether your symptoms are a physical or psychological they are still symptoms and will make you feel uncomfortable at the very least.

Every year, around 13,000 Americans are murdered with guns; a similar number dies from AIDS, and approximately 10,000 people per year dies from consumption of illegal drugs. A recent article in The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that an estimated 113,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs which, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered. This is unbelievable: over 113,000 luckless patients died from taking the CORRECTLY prescribed medication at the correct dose. This makes prescription drugs the fourth leading killer in the US after cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Let me state this one more time: prescription drugs are now the 4th leading cause of death in America. FDA-approved pharmaceuticals, prescribed by a doctor, are killing at least, if not more, 113,000 Americans a year.

This number includes only drugs given properly and under normal circumstances. This excludes drugs administered in error or taken in attempted suicides. When errors of administration are included, the death toll is around 160,000 per year.

If you believe panic attacks are overrated, you haven’t searched Google lately on the subject. “Panic attacks” received roughly 15,600,000 search hits and “anxiety attacks” Another 1,790,000. That proves that not only is there a great deal of interest in the subject but more importantly, a great many victims of the syndrome. I employ the word syndrome because its cause is mostly psychological as well as relatively “harmless” to the sufferer.

Its distinct cause is fear, plain and simple. This being said, however, it would be negligent to conclude that the symptoms are entirely psychosomatic because any number of panic attacks can be attributed to, enhanced by, or directly caused by the mental reaction to any number of drugs – marijuana included. One licensed practitioner (whose opinion has been affirmed by countless others) stated,

“Substance abuse and the withdrawal of the substance being abused can mimic panic attacks. Alcohol, marijuana, opiates, hallucinogens, cocaine, over-the-counter drugs (nasal sprays and diet tablets), caffeine and benzodiazepines can all be associated with panic attacks.”

US healthcare reform: a double-edged sword

The US House of Representatives has passed legislation paving the way for major healthcare system reform designed to substantially decrease the number of individuals without health insurance. Despite its potential benefits, it believes that the reform is a mixed blessing for the pharmaceutical industry as cost-containment pressures are set to intensify in the long term. ( http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=134206&rt=Pharmaceutical-Licensing-Overview.html )

The landmark bill will overhaul the US healthcare system, aiming to reduce the number of individuals without healthcare insurance, improve access to healthcare and curb escalating costs. The bill focuses on health insurance system reform, specifically: expanding Medicaid insurance coverage for the poor; implementing stricter rules for private health insurers; outlining the creation of an individual mandate to purchase insurance; and introducing health insurance premium subsidies. I recently interviewed an administrator in an addiction treatment center and found out that when clients come to them for help with a prescription drug addiction or abuse problem, they’re not just taking one or two drugs; it’s closer to 15.

The term ‘drug of choice’ has been around for a long time. But when it comes to the way young people are taking prescription drugs, the term has become obsolete. They take whatever’s going.

They often get them from parents’ and friends’ medicine cabinets, take the pills themselves, offer them to friends, and dump them in bowls at parties where anyone can take whatever strikes their fancy.

In recent decades, many people pay much attention to drug addiction of young people, which becomes a serious social problem in these days. The individual and the institution are making their efforts to solve this problem. In 2006, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime selected “drugs are not child’s play” as the theme of its international campaign, in an effort to increase public awareness of the destructive power of drugs and society’s responsibility to care for the well-being of children. The latest statistics indicate that 200 million people, or 5 per cent of the global population aged 15-64, have consumed illicit drugs at least once in the last 12 months. Children with poor self-control and discretion are more likely to become the victims.
