For those people experiencing problems with their eyes, a visit to an eye doctor is very important. Most optometrists offer all the necessary treatments that cover most eye conditions and will deal with the problem both professionally and quickly. Optometrists are of the same caliber as medical doctor except that do not perform surgery and would be happy to deal with any eye problems presented to them.

For some, the thought of visiting an eye doctor is a little frightening. Having people poking around in the eyes is like sticking hands in flames. It is not absolutely necessary and people will tend to make excuses not to get their eyes looked at. But this is not a good thing. The eyes are one of the most important parts of your body. They are an important organ with easy access from the outside which makes them both delicate and vulnerable. We use our eyes each and every day, even while we sleep. So what are some things we can do to protect the eyes.

Artificial Lighting:
Neon lights are hard on the eyes and can affect your eyesight. It’s much better to use full spectrum lamps or light bulbs.

Televisions and Computers:
Because the distance and the angle never changes, your eyes become stagnant because you are forced to stare at the screens. Look away from the screen and around the room often. During commercials, glance at something closer to you and then far away so that you are changing up the distance. Try to limit what and how long you watch something. If you start becoming irritated or frustrated with what you are watching, walk away from it because your eyes are now starting to strain. The first exercise is called the Spot exercise. To perform this exercise find a comma or period on a page and focus on making it as clear as possible. Stare at the period until it comes into focus. Chances are after a few seconds the period will actually become less clear and blurred. This is normal and is just your eye becoming tired from being worked – similar to the way a muscle becomes fatigued when worked.

Allow your eyes to relax. Close them for up to a minute and let them relax fully. Now look at the period without straining. Don’t stare; instead, let your eyes slowly move around the page, over and around the period. Don’t focus only on the period, the eyes need movement. Make sure to blink a bit. Try closing your eyes and picturing the dot and then look at it again. Once the eyes are relaxed it should be easier to see the period.
