Health insurance is very important, and can be even more important when you are unemployed after all, when you can barely afford to buy food and pay your rent, how can you pay for your own medical care? If you are in an accident or become suddenly ill, what will you do? It’s crucial that you find some sort of insurance coverage that you can afford as soon as possible. Affordable health insurance sounds like an oxymoron, but there are several options you should look into.

First of all, if you were covered on your employer’s health plan before you lost your job, you should look into COBRA. This stands for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, and may apply to you. This form of affordable health insurance means that you do have to pay insurance premiums, but they are usually equal to what your employer was paying for you before, and frequently are much less expensive than conventional health insurance. This coverage can last up to a year after your employment ends, and usually will cover your family or dependents as well. If you have been laid off recently, check with your former employer’s benefits administrator to see if you might be eligible for COBRA they will supply you with any forms you may need to fill out.

If you are not eligible for COBRA, there is probably still a way for you to get affordable health insurance. There are many companies that specialize in matching people who are looking for coverage with the appropriate company and health insurance package, frequently at no cost to you. Shop around with various insurance brokers and insurance advice websites, and make a list of what your own situation requires in the way of health coverage – there’s no point in paying for something that doesn’t apply to you. You may require only short-term coverage, or you may be looking for something long-term. If you have small children, your needs are probably different from your neighbors who are approaching retirement and have no family at home.

Finding the proper package of affordable health insurance to suit your needs may take a little bit of research on your part, but it will be worth it. No one can predict what health emergencies may happen tomorrow, and even everyday minor illnesses can be terribly draining, both financially and emotionally, to those who have no health insurance at all. If you are without any coverage, you may avoid even a simple doctor’s visit for a checkup, which can lead to further problems if you have a health condition that needs monitoring, or worse, one that you don’t even know about, which will only cost you much more money in the long run, as well as hurt your health. Protect your well-being and your wallet by finding affordable health insurance today.

The 2008 election has brought the topic of “affordable health care” and “affordable health insurance” to the forefront and, along with it, a slew of misconceptions. So, what is true and what is false? The purpose of the following article is to dispel some of these myths and misconceptions and provide information to make a muddy topic a bit clearer.

1. The first misconception is that, for some reason, Americans equate affordable health care to be “socialized medicine.”

This is not the case at all. According to Wiktionary, socialized medicine is “an umbrella term for any system of government-run health care.” Many people balk at the idea of socialized medicine because the citizens inevitably pick up the costs through higher taxes. Affordable health care, on the other hand, is as simple as the phrase states – it is health care with costs low enough for everyone to afford. The government does not necessarily oversee it and individuals are free to go to physicians of their choice. It is not discriminatory to those with lower incomes and services are equal whether one is poor or financially privileged.

2. Another misconception is that the current total of uninsured Americans is not as high as many journalists and polls report, and that this is a relevant fact that points to the lack of necessity for affordable health care.

The Kaiser Family Foundation even stated that their numbers include those who have been without insurance for two years or more. The Congressional Budget Office also said that just under half of those lacking health insurance will be without coverage for less than four months, due to being in between jobs. These numbers beg the following question, however: What about those who have something catastrophic occur within those four months that they are without insurance? Without adequate coverage, their medical bills could potentially lead to major hardships.

3. A third misconception is that the only people without health insurance are those who are poor.

This is simply not true. Americans of all income levels are without health insurance. In fact, at least half of all bankruptcies in the United States are due to medical bills. Because individuals are already paying high premiums due to not having affordable health care, when medical bills begin to accumulate, Americans are unable to pay both the premium costs as well as the mounting medical bills. And with the unemployment rate rising, more people are falling into the category of being without health insurance. Whether they are losing the insurance that came with the job they lost, or whether they are unable to continue paying the premiums due to a lack of income, the rate of uninsured Americans is on the rise.

As illustrated above, the need for affordable health care and insurance has become more crucial than ever. The current economic crisis, along with job losses being on the rise, could lead to detrimental effects on the health of Americans. Affordable health care would offer a safety net for both minor and major medical issues.

The Affordable Health Insurance Network (www.AffordableHealthInsurance.NET) is a network of researchers, journalists, and contributors that supply and document relevant content about the health care industry.

Many people today take health insurance coverage for granted; there are many people who do not even have coverage. The issue is over 46 million people who do not have any health insurance or dental insurance. When you look at these numbers it breaks down that one out of every six people have no medical or dental coverage. As you view this problem it’s happening to people all across the country.

The major issue facing medical insurance and dental insurance is the pros and cons of enforcing a universal coverage law that has been based on the research that many people across the states are uninsured young individuals, such as teenagers who are healthier individuals who don’t believe they need any coverage.

But the problem is there are millions of people who don’t have health insurance because they suffer from chronic conditions and cannot afford the treatments. You have one out of every three working-age Americans without medical insurance has a chronic illness to deal with, but the lack of medical or dental coverage is due to getting accepted for any health or dental insurance policy when they have a pre-existing condition. In this trying times getting the proper care a person’s needs is difficult if they are already dealing with a health problem, which is going to cost them a lot of money to just get a little bit of coverage and a lot of times they are not fully covered.

With Baby Boomers reaching retirement, the need for good inexpensive health and dental care has reached an all time high. Prices for these services continue to go up with no end in sight and most people are beginning to wonder if they can afford to have dental and health at all.

AmeriPlan has the answer to this problem with a program that cuts out the middle man and brings you straight to the dentist or doctor. Programs listed for every member of your household include everyone you live with, even if they are not family and all this does is allow everyone to be able to afford the health care for themselves and their family.

When it comes to our health, there can be no bigger scare than hearing you have cancer. Immediately, your mind will be barraged by an endless stream of questions with no immediate answer and a sudden sense of our own mortality. You will also be faced with breaking the news to family, if you choose to do so — all this on top of the actual treatment itself.

However, cancer should not be as feared as it once was. Not so many years ago a cancer diagnosis meant almost certain death but science and research have made great steps in finding treatments and cures for many, many types of cancer. Certain health insurance companies even offer packages that specifically cover cancers so we can do all we can to help ourselves by taking out health insurance and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Every year in the UK over one thousand women will die from cervical cancer. It is the twelfth most common cancer for women to contract and we have a 0.8% chance of facing it in our lifetime. It is caused by the HPV (human papilloma virus) which can take up to twenty years to develop. This is why screening is so important. Screening is carried out regularly for women between the ages of 25 and 65 and detects early changes that could lead to cervical cancer. This means that it can be dealt with quickly and effectively.

However, with still so many women dying, it obviously wasn’t catching everyone and a vaccine was needed. Hence, we now have the HPV vaccine currently being rolled out in a campaign to vaccinate all school girls, beginning with the 12-13 year age group. The vaccine is given in three stages over six months.

A spanner has now been thrown in the works with the death of one young girl which occurred within an hour of her receiving the HPV vaccine. Authorities say she had an underlying health issue that contributed to her death but this will be enough to scare some parents into holding their daughters back from receiving the vaccine.

Of course, you cannot perfect any vaccine that will be suitable for everyone and if you know of any health problems you have, then of course, you can take this into account. The only problem is a health issue that you don’t know about and nobody wants their child to be the ONE.

Now, we can eat healthily, exercise regularly, take up offered vaccines that we feel comfortable with and take out life insurance to cope quickly with anything that is thrown our way but we cannot insure against the unexpected. All we can really do is be vigilant and learn to listen to our bodies and hope for the best!

Catherine Parker looks at how health insurance is just one of the things we can do to help ourselves and our families.

Growing waistlines equal growing health care costs. At least that’s how it seems regarding health and health insurance. A famous documentary has already shown the short-term impact of too many super-sized meals. But did you know that there’s another price you’re paying now – in health insurance dollars – for our nation’s weight problem?

Health insurance rates have been rising, with double-digit increases in each of the past three years. Most analysts blame these rising costs on an increased use of medical services. Are we just a nation of hypochondriacs? Why are we visiting doctors’ offices in droves? As many experts are pointing out, part of the answer may be obesity.

More than 60 percent of Americans presently qualify as overweight or obese. Even among children, obesity rates have tripled over the past decade. Obesity is known to considerably raise your risk of orthopedic problems, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, certain types of cancer, and respiratory problems. The Surgeon General’s office estimates that obesity costs the economy more than $100 billion a year.

Insurance companies understand that obesity is costly. If you’re an obese person trying to get health coverage, you may be turned down due to the risks associated with your weight. If you’re not turned down, you’ll probably pay more for coverage, up to twice as much as a slimmer person. And even though you can’t be turned down for employer-sponsored health insurance based on obesity, the increased cost of insuring you becomes a financial burden not only for you, but also for your coworkers.

Now this doesn’t mean that skinny people should blame heavier people for the annual insurance rate hikes that everyone dreads. There are other factors involved, like the increased use of prescription drugs and costly new medical technologies. But if the majority of Americans is obese and it’s substantially more expensive to insure an obese person, you can begin to see how big a role an expanding waistline may play in expanding health insurance costs.

So, what can we all do about this waistline epidemic? In the United States alone, obesity is expected to overtake smoking as the number-one cause of preventable death. Through a combination of government action and an aggressive public persuasion campaign, smoking is on the decline. These tactics can also be used in the battle on obesity.

Or perhaps we need to make the connection between obesity and health insurance costs more apparent to encourage our government and public health organizations to help in the battle of the bulge. Maybe that will encourage health insurance companies to expand coverage for weight-loss programs and procedures. Most importantly, perhaps if we feel the impact of obesity in our pocketbooks, we’ll take our health more seriously.

If you’ve never considered the ramifications of what you eat, maybe you should. It may not seem like it will affect your health now, but it certainly will in the long run. And as you’ll discover, what affects your health also will eventually affect your bank account.

Funny thing pain, if you’ve never had a severe pain then the suggestion of taking simple analgesia and resting the affected area all seems quite reasonable. I was reminded of this when I read recently of a doctor’s advice to someone who was suffering from sciatica. Having personally experienced sciatica, it’s a condition I would not recommend to anyone who wishes to walk, sit, laugh, sleep, or to just simply pull up your trousers. It’s a bit like a dentist drilling your teeth without an anaesthetic, but it affects your whole leg. In other words the pain is consuming, exhausting and without respite. Clinical studies do show that in the majority of cases the pain will eventually subside and surgery may not be necessary, but in the meantime the patient has to deal with the pain or deal with the medication required to dull the pain. Remember, pain-killers are not selective to the area affected. They affect the whole of the nervous system and elsewhere so there may be significant side-effects from these medications.

Dealing with severe pain can be a complex issue, but I suggest that you have to treat this sort of pain fairly aggressively as acute severe pain is relatively easier to treat than chronic severe pain. In the early stages of an injury or insult to an area of the body, most of the pathological processes are happening at the site of the injury or insult. Throughout time the brain begins to modulate this pain and so no only do you have the injured area to deal with, but you also have complex neural pathways within the brain to deal with as well. This often means a far more complex management plan and a far more protracted recovery time. Specialists are very skilled at dealing with these issues but they do rely heavily on the stories their patients give them. That means being honest in answering their questions and not being heroic with a grin and bear it grimace! Often the use of a pain scale is helpful with zero being no pain at all and a 10 being the worse pain you have ever experienced.

Another health issue we commonly down play is influenza. Over the years I have frequently heard people say that they would not have the flu vaccine because either they never get the flu or that they had it last week for a couple of days and then it was all over! Influenza is a serious debilitating disease that will usually last from 10 days to two weeks and often leave you flat on your back exhausted. It’s not a happy 10 days either as patients do not have the energy to read a magazine or even watch a DVD. You will literally feel ancient with every movement being a real challenge and that doesn’t include the aching all over or the fevers and sleepless nights. The influenza virus is also extremely contagious and most people are unaware that if you spread it to someone who is more frail than yourself that you may actually be putting their life at risk.

With the ‘flu the big challenge is to vaccinate as many people in the community as possible, including children, those employed and unemployed, the elderly and the infirm, to reduce the chance of an epidemic occurring. Recent research has also showed that vaccinating pregnant women in the last trimester of their pregnancy will help protect their new born infants born during the ‘flu season.

Medicine has evolved over the last 40 years, but the change has been fairly slow with doctors by nature being very cautious and conservative people. But we can’t leave the doctors to take all the initiatives. As patients we need to be good listeners in our approach to health by heeding all the great health messages that keep being given to us about vaccinations, smoking, alcohol, exercise and healthy eating. We also need to be good communicators and tell our doctors how we are feeling with conditions such as pain. If the team treating you doesn’t have the best information then it may be that you will not end up getting the best treatment!

For the past several months, the daily economic news has been grim. We hear about more job losses, foreclosures, home sales down, food prices soar, the stock market goes up and down. These are extraordinarily difficult times for everyone, and in some way everyone is affected by the situation. The never-ending stress taps into your energy and saps your strength; it tests your faith and leaves you confused. Families without the added stressors of alcohol or drugs will pull together; they will make some sacrifices as they grumble and complain, but in the end these families will more than likely survive the current economy.

What about the alcoholic? More importantly, what about the children living with an alcoholic? Research has confirmed that alcoholics lack coping skills. When faced with problems, the alcoholic will turn to the bottle. Most of us have seen the destructive dysfunction that results from alcohol or drug abuse. What happens when the alcoholic faces a job loss or pay cut, or loses the important health insurance? These situations exceed the “normal” stress of life and will most likely find the alcoholic turning to the bottle more often and in larger quantities.

The National Runaway Switchboard has reported that there has been an alarming increase in calls over the past year. The callers have been increasingly younger. These victims have reported abuse and neglect with alcohol a common denominator in many cases. With the increased stress from the economy, there has been an increase in alcohol and drug abuse. With increased alcohol and drug abuse, we have seen more violent outbursts. The sad result has been child abuse and neglect. Unfortunately, the weak economy has also reduced the funding for shelters and self-help organizations.

As we all know, eventually there will be more jobs and stocks will go up. We can all go eat lobster and see a movie. The economy will bounce back and up! In the interim, we need to ask ourselves a question: what about the children living in alcoholic homes during these tough times? Will their self-esteem ever be restored? What are the permanent lasting affects on these future leaders? We all need to be aware of the far reaching affects of a “bad” economy. Recent research indicated that children of alcoholics not only risk becoming an alcoholic but are more likely to abuse drugs.

We must pay attention to friends and family members that may need some extra help, and possibly intervention, during this tough time. Teachers, church leaders and adults that come in contact with children, stay watchful and pay attention to children that may be living in an alcoholic home. The turmoil in an alcoholic home can create guilt, shame and confusion for the children. These children try desperately to keep this ugly family secret, yet more than anything they need a trusted adult that will listen to them. Encouragement and support will begin their journey on the road to recovery.

We are all in this together, and we need to help each other. If we turn our backs on these children in need, the economy will recover but a huge segment of our society will not.

The United States of America envisions the country providing affordable and quality health to Americans. There is a huge challenge to overcome fraud waste and abuse, medical errors and medical necessity determination. The problem of improper payments has to be dealt intelligently to avoid under and over coding.

Every common layman knows that only reforms can bring revolution in healthcare, president Obama has put emphasis on the reforms very much but only spending money on the name of reforms would not actually change the healthcare system it is about the “effectiveness of system” that will bring the change.

One of the core features of the Obama plan is the claim that every family will save about $2,500 per year. The plan accommodates a Health information technology investment aimed at tumbling unneeded expenses that result from preventable errors and infertile paper billing systems. It will also help preventing and organizing of unrelenting circumstances. The preparation is required to raise insurance industry competition and reduce underwriting costs and profits in order to reduce insurance overhead. The health insurance should be universal which will diminish spending on uncompensated care.

The government has come up with RAC (Recovery Audit Contractor) which has completed its demonstration and now the government is thinking on lines to go nationwide with RACs. Just because the amount is significant in term of recovery, RACs are satisfactory for CMS in reality the percentage of recovery is far lesser than the potential. This system requires utmost utilization of human resources whereas an intelligent Electronic health Record system would pin point the problem at first stage. It will reduce a lot of cost and the wastage of resources.

The strategy and Tactics both are off beam in RACs case. It is quite simple, despite going in to the root cause; all the effort is to eliminate the problems occurred due to that root cause. RAC primarily task is to recover the payments either under payments or overpayments, but why not address the main problematic area. The spotlight should be on the system that does not allow improper payments rather then after improper payments making efforts to recover them. Both strategy (which direction to go?) and Tactic (how to get there?) are erroneous.

When you first look at a person, you probably try to read his or her face. While the eyes are a large part of communicating with body language, the mouth is another important feature that can confer happiness, anger, sadness, and disgust, among other things. Thus, it is key to keep your mouth and teeth in tip-top condition so that you can flash those pearly whites whenever you want.

First, many people already have an established tooth-brushing regimen. Dentists agree that brushing twice a day is optimal, but you will not do any harm if you choose to brush a third time either. If you eat or drink an especially sugary item that may stain your teeth, it can be good to brush your teeth immediately afterward.

To choose a toothbrush, look for one whose size coordinates with the size of your mouth. Sometimes, it is better to choose a slightly smaller toothbrush as it can get to tighter spaces in your mouth. Also, make sure that the brushes are not too harsh, as they can scrape away the protective enamel on your teeth. Be sure to clean and replace your toothbrush regularly, as it can lose its effectiveness in wiping away bacteria. Additionally, you may want to get a new brush after you are sick as it can collect germs.

When you are choosing a toothpaste, it seems like the varieties are endless. First, make sure that the toothpaste you want has a seal from the American Dental Association. This means that the paste has bee inspected and approved to be helpful in maintaining your dental health. Next, you probably want a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent cavities as well as reduce tooth decay. As for the other features, you can choose if you want a whitening agent or not. If you are unsure, a tartar control paste is always good for keeping your teeth polished.

Lastly, many people do not realize how important flossing is. In fact, some studies have found that flossing can add years to your life. This is because flossing scrapes away the bacteria that can grow in the hard-to-reach, tight places between your teeth. Here, the bacteria can cause gum disease and even slip into the bloodstream. Once the bacteria is in the bloodstream, it can result in inflammation that increases your risk for things like strokes.

To keep your pearly whites healthy, you should brush and floss daily. Additionally, you should take regular visits to the dentists so that he or she can check for any potential problems. To help you pay for your dentist appointments, you should consider purchasing a health insurance plan. Catherine Michaels Insurance Services is an independent insurance agency that can help you find the best health insurance plan for you, whether you need it for a family or just you.

One of the most important things that you need to think about after high school is an affordable student health insurance plan. At age 20, most of the health plans parents have will not cover the children. Once you have realized that you are going to college, you will need to see about a health insurance plan for yourself.

Depending on what college you attend will determine the health benefits they offer. You may be able to get your office visits and checkups for free. You will probably pay for any lab work and visits that are for special reasons. Health benefits from the college will usually cover services you receive from the campus health care center but if you find an off campus doctor, you could pay up to a 70% higher deductible or payment.

You may or may not qualify for student health insurance if you have a preexisting condition. For any pre-existing condition you may have, you will need to be prepared to see a doctor outside the campus health center. Most of the centers will not treat anything that you have before you get the college health insurance plan. Hopefully, you will not have anything happen that is a result of the condition. It may be a problem area for you to deal with since you may not be able to get treatment for it.

You will need to find out about everything covered and included in your particular student health insurance plan. Make sure to ask about coverage over summer break. Find out about it now before you actually have an accident and you find out too late that your health insurance plan will not cover it. Summer break coverage is something that may be offered by one plan and not with every health insurance plan.

You will also need to find out exactly what kind of coverage the student health insurance plan offers. If you have an HMO plan, you may not be able to go to any doctor you want. If you go to a doctor outside coverage, you might end up with the whole bill to pay.

It is ultimately your choice to decide if you should get the college health insurance from you institution. It may be a lifesaver for you when an emergency happens. Even if it is not free, you may save hundreds of dollars on your bill. Whatever plan you decide on, make sure that you study it thoroughly so you know what you are covered for and want is not covered. You will not want any surprises to be announced when you are in the middle of an emergency.
