You and your family can save a lot of pain, worry, and money by avoiding health problems in the first place. If you can’t prevent a problem altogether, the next best thing is to discover it early, when it is easy to treat. Here are Ten ways you should do to stay healthy.

Immunize. Immunizations are the best bargain in health care. When you immunize, you prevent illness for your family and help prevent epidemics in your community. Follow this link for Immunization recomendations

Keep Moving. Any way you define it, fitness is essential to good health. Even moderate exercise makes a huge difference both in how you feel and what illnesses you get.

Eat Right. Eating a well-balanced, low-fat diet of wholesome foods will keep you energetic and free of many illnesses. Consider breast-feeding your baby to help keep him or her in the best health.

Control stress. Even with a hectic and hurried lifestyle, you can prevent stress from undermining your health.

Be smoke-free. Smokers who quit gain tremendous health benefits. So do people who avoid secondhand smoke.

Avoid drugs and excess alcohol. When you say “no” to drugs and limit what you drink, you prevent accidents and illnesses and avoid a lot of problems for yourself and your family.

Put safety first. Safety at home, at work, and at play; safe driving; firearm safety; and safe sex will all help keep you healthy.

Pursue healthy pleasures. Take naps, relax during meals, play with kids, care for a pet – they all can add to your health.

Think well of yourself. A good self-image is the foundation of good health.

Promote peace. Peace on earth begins at home. Seek nonviolent ways of resolving conflicts at home, at school , at work, and in your community.

Except in an emergency, you cannot be given a treatment or test without your “informed consent.” You must be informed of the risks and agree to the treatment. In a partnership, however, informed consent may not be enough. The real goal is shared decision-making, where you actively participate in every medical decision.

Why should you help make decisions with your doctor? Aren’t you paying him or her to know what to do? Well, the choices aren’t always black and white. With many health problems, there is more than one option. Consider these examples:

You have moderately high blood pressure (160/95). Your doctor says that exercise and diet might bring it down, but most people don’t succeed that way. Your doctor recommends that you start on medication to control it. You would rather try exercise and lose weight than take pills for the rest of your life. The best decision depends on your values.

Your three-year-old has a headache and a fever. The doctor says it’s probably nothing to worry about. Then you mention your hunch that it might be meningitis. Some testing may be appropriate.

You have been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome for several months. Your doctor is now recommending a wrist splint and a steroid injection. You would prefer

trying just the splint with aspirin first. If that doesn’t work, you will consider other medications. Your doctor agrees that is a good plan.

In each case, the treatment you choose will have an effect on your life. Therefore, the best medicine for you combines your doctor’s medical expertise with your personal values.

Eight Ways to Share in Medical Decisions

1. Let your doctor know what you want. Tell your doctor that you want to help make decisions about what to do for your health problems.

2. Do your own research.

Sometimes you need to learn things on your own before you can fully understand what your doctor is saying. See “Do Your Own Research” on page 15 for some ways to get the information you need.

3. Ask “‘why?” Always ask “why?” before agreeing to any medical test, medication, or treatment. Asking why may help you discover another option that better meets your needs.

4. Ask about alternatives. Learn enough to understand the options your doctor thinks are feasible.

5. Consider watchful waiting. Ask your doctor if it would be risky or costly to wait a while (day, week, month) before treatment.

6. State your preferences. Tell your doctor if you prefer one option over another based on your personal desires and values.

7. Compare expectations. Tell your doctor what you are expecting from the treatment and ask if that is real-istic. If appropriate, discuss side effects, pain, recovery time, long¬term limitations, etc.

8. Accept responsibility. When you make shared decisions with your doctor, both of you must accept the responsibility for the outcomes.

Monitoring the drug abuse statistics in our youth is a great indicator of the future of the next generations. Organizations such as Monitoring The Future (MTF) have been conducting research since the mid 1970s on the use of drugs amongst 12th grade students and their perception of drugs and its use. The University of Michigan’s Institute of Social Research conducts the studies.

The study is longitudinal and follows the patterns and changes in attitudes of the students over time. In 1991, the studies included 8th and 10th graders too.

The latest drug abuse statistics conducted by MTF were taken in 2008. The key findings showed a decrease in the abuse pattern for a majority of the drugs compared to the previous year.

There were a few positive results that were highlighted. In 2008, the number of 10th graders that have used any illicit drugs in their lifetime had significantly declined in comparison to 2007.

The percentage of youngsters in this age group that smoke cigarettes have continued to decline over the years, and has fallen to the lowest rate in the history of the survey. This is a promising finding, as the use of tobacco is one of the major concerns in health problems.

The use of any stimulant such as amphetamines and crystal methamphetamine is in continuing decline. The use of crack cocaine amongst 12th graders declined from 2008 to 2007.

Overall, the use of alcohol has also decreased amongst all the mentioned age groups in the last year. The 10the graders display a significant decline in the usage of alcohol.

However, there are also areas of concern that have been highlighted by the drug abuse statistics. Even though the use of marijuana has declined over the years, it appears to have reached a plateau with as much as 32.4 per cent of 12th graders using it regularly. The statistics for the use of prescriptive drugs without a medical prescription is also cause for concern with 15.4 per cent of 12th graders having done so in the past year. The perception of risk of harm associated with the use of LSD is also in continual decline. Next: Follow the links below to read more on the topics of drug addiction and abuse.

If you don’t have a family doctor (primary care physician), now is the time to get one. Everyone needs a regular doctor. A host of specialists working on separate health problems may not see the whole picture. In choosing a doctor there are lots of questions to ask, but these three matter the most:

- Is this doctor well-trained and experienced?

- Is this doctor available when needed?

- Will this doctor work in partnership with me?

Training and Experience

For most people, a good choice for a family doctor is a board-certified family practice doctor or internist. For children and teens, a pediatrician is a good choice. These doctors have broad knowledge about medical problems.

Availability

Because health problems rarely develop when it’s convenient, it helps to have a doctor who can see you when needed. Call or visit the office. Tell the clinic receptionist that you are looking for a new doctor.Ask these questions:

- What are the office hours?

- If I called right now for a routine visit, how soon could I be seen?

- How much time is allowed for a routine visit?

- Will the doctor discuss health problems over the phone?

Calling Your Doctor
Is it okay to call your doctor? Of course it is. Often a phone call to the doctor or advice nurse is all you need to manage a problem at home or determine if a visit is needed. Here’s how to get the most from every call:

Prepare for your call.
- Write down a one-sentence description of your problem and why you are calling (list two to three questions at most).

- Have your symptom list handy

- Have your calendar handy in case you need to schedule an appointment.

Leave a clear message.
- Tell your one-sentence descrip¬tion to the person who answers and ask to talk with a doctor or advice nurse.

- If no one is available, ask the receptionist to relay your mes¬sage and have someone call you back. Ask when they might call.

- If a call-back is needed, keep the phone line clear so you can take the call.

Follow through.
When the doctor or advice nurse calls back, briefly describe your problem, ask your questions, and describe any major symptoms.

The rapid increase in obesity across the country has resulted in a number of serious health problems. Many of these health problems can deteriorate a persons quality of life and even shorten a persons life. One such health condition that is made worse when obese is asthma. Studies are now showing that there is a link between asthma and morbid obesity. For people who are suffering from severe obesity, lap band surgery has been shown to be an effective method of weight loss that reduces instances of severe asthma attacks.

Obesity has been proven to be a risk factor for such diseases as heart disease, some types of cancer, and diabetes. Now, research studies are revealing that obesity is a risk factor for asthma. For instance, studies now show the risk for developing asthma increases when there is a large increase in weight. When a person is seriously overweight, their breathing becomes shallow because their lungs do not expand as much as it would if one were a normal healthy weight. As well, in obese individuals, there is a chronic inflammation of the lungs which reduces the airway passage. The inflammation takes place in the fatty tissue. A narrower airway passage also means the airways will remain blocked when breathing normally which reduces oxygen exchange. The airways will contract more causing more asthma symptoms. Narrow airways in obese asthmatics are more likely to stay closed during normal breathing which results in reduced oxygen exchange which puts one in a higher risk category for pulmonary hypertension. As well, obese people are more prone to sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease which can make asthma worse.

When a person suffers from obesity, they tend to have more severe asthma problems than those who are not obese. With a weight loss surgery such as lap band surgery, there can be considerable improvement for people suffering from asthma. With the loss of the excess fat, lung function will improve, inflammation will subside, the air passages will open up, and people will breathe better. As well, they will need less medication and there will be fewer trips to the hospital due to a severe asthma attack.

Lap band surgery has become a popular weight loss procedure to treat obesity because it is minimally invasive with few side effects. As well as having proven positive health results, the procedure normally takes less than an hour and the patient recovery time is short with most patients going home just a few hours after the procedure. It is also the only reversible option and post operative lap band adjustments are made without additional surgery.

During home recovery, the patient will have simple diet to follow as they learn how to eat healthy and the correct amounts of food. Lap band surgery is a great option for those suffering from obesity and serious health problems such as asthma. When considering any type of surgery, it is important to consult with a physician to learn about the benefits and risks involved with the procedure.

How is it that as technology advances and new inventions are created to make life easier, more people in the developed world are dying of cancer, heart disease and stroke every year?

The key lies in a lack of Awareness and Action. More people need to know about the links between the lifestyles they lead and how these affect their bodies. But knowledge is nothing if it is not applied. There needs to be the additional effort of acting on the knowledge to make the tough but necessary lifestyle changes that will halt disease and put our overtaxed bodies back on the path to health and wellness.

Creating Awareness

Let’s talk about cholesterol. It is one of the fats in the blood and can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke. Yet how many people actually know this? We may vaguely “know of” good and bad cholesterol from what we read or hear about in the news, but not many of us will make the connection between what we are eating now on a daily basis and the disease that erupts years down the road. Even fewer will do something about this connection.

According to the Director of the Heart and Vascular Division at The George Institute for International Health, Associate Professor Bruce Neal, many Australians do not fully appreciate the health risks caused by cholesterol. If they did, many deaths could be prevented.

The good news is that high cholesterol is a problem that is preventable and treatable with a better diet, more exercise and (for some) medication. Unfortunately, most people are not even aware that they may be at risk of cholesterol-related health problems, and do not get their cholesterol levels checked regularly.

What can we do to educate ourselves on disease prevention and healthy living? For a start, we can read more. The Internet has incredible amounts of useful information from reliable, respected sources such as regulatory websites and medical research websites. Health magazines often carry short, easy-to-digest articles on the latest health and research findings. The library is a free resource for specialized and general health topics. That is where my husband and I chanced upon Dr. Sandra Cabot’s wonderfully readable yet highly informative books on the Liver Cleansing Diet, weight loss and cholesterol.

Secondly, we must take greater responsibility for our health. Doctors treat symptoms; they have neither the resources nor the interest to help you discover what is at the root of your particular ailment. You and I have to assume that responsibility ourselves by being conscious of what is going into our bodies each day. We need to ask more questions about the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the personal care products we slap on our faces and skin, the household cleaning solutions we use. All of these things potentially contain toxins and chemicals that are damaging to our long-term health because they create toxin build-up in our bodies.

The food we eat

Our bodies have become burdened with high levels of trans and saturated fats which cling to our blood vessels and organs. They need to be broken down and flushed out of the system, but there isn’t enough dietary fibre to help them move along. The result is a cluttered, sickly bowel and liver, which in turn leads to disease. A 2-pronged solution is recommended. First, increase the amount of living foods in our diet. Living foods are raw, unprocessed foods which (still) contain the vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed to help you properly break down and digest your food. If you can, choose organic food. It is pesticide free, GMO free, and has more nutritional content; some even assert it tastes better.

Secondly, do a regular cleansing of your bowel and liver with a good detoxification routine. One way is to take probiotics. Probiotics are the supplement form of beneficial microorganisms that protect and build gastrointestinal health. Beneficial microorganisms play a critical role in improving digestion, rebalancing the intestinal flora lost through the use of antibiotics, and preventing harmful bacteria from growing to levels where they can cause disease. To ensure that the probiotic you take is of maximum benefit to you, there are 2 things you can do. Look up independent watchdog Consumer Lab’s website for product reviews to see if the brand you intend to buy is on their approved list. Secondly, check that the brand is certified organic.

The water we drink

The water we drink is highly processed, treated and disinfected. This is to combat the effects of contamination from natural and synthetic sources. The latter include sewage, industrial activity, pesticide runoff, improper dumping and defective water treatment. Even though tap water is generally safe for drinking, there is controversy over the effects of adding chlorine and fluoride. A possible solution is to buy bottled water (preferably water that is bottled at its source) or to use a water filter or purifier that removes impurities without disturbing dissolved minerals that are essential to our health.

What are we feeding our skin?

The skin is the largest organ in our body, which makes it the entry point of toxins into the system. Anything we apply to the skin is potentially absorbed. This includes anti-ageing creams and serums, moisturizers, facial cleansers, cosmetics, sunscreen, shampoo and deodorants. Off-the-shelf products contain a notoriously high level of harmful chemical ingredients (some of which are cancer-causing) that we may not be aware of because they are not fully disclosed on ingredient labels, and even if they were, we might not understand them. Over time, use of these products contributes to toxic build-up and disease.

In the US, the cosmetics industry is self-regulated and resource-strapped regulators do not have the legal muscle to enforce product and ingredient reviews. This means we don’t yet know as much as we should about the effects of product ingredients on our long-term health. In the meantime, we continue to buy on the basis of brand recognition and price and unknowingly contribute to the levels of toxins in our bodies. The solution? Start reading ingredient labels. Find out what parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate and phthalates can do to you and your children. There are helpful toxic ingredients glossaries on the Internet. Secondly, switch to organic personal care. Better still, find suppliers whose products are certified organic by a reputable independent certifying body. It is the only way you can guarantee the quality of the product.

Our household cleaners

Dishwashing and laundry detergents and multipurpose cleaners tend to emphasize effectiveness over safety. When you read the product label of the average cleaning product, it contains a warning that you should not inhale or swallow the product as this can cause irritation or poisoning. This is an indication of the harshness of its contents. Some companies are realizing that there is a growing demand for safer cleaning products and have developed phosphate-free, ammonia-free and fragrance-free alternatives. Look for these in your supermarket aisles or online. Again, if you can, choose organic.

What are we feeding our minds?

The cornerstone of good health is a balanced diet and exercise. However, as part of a more holistic approach to health, we also need to be conscious of what we feed our minds. As a man thinks, so is he. If you want to attract the positive into your life, you must attune your mind to focus on the positive. Attitudes and actions flow from thoughts. Focus your energy on thinking of what is good, pure and beneficial to you and to others, and replace self-limiting thoughts such as “I can’t”, “I don’t know how” or “I won’t”.

The journey to optimum health starts with a series of small steps in the right direction. Build an awareness of issues that affect your and your family’s health. Then take action to make the lifestyle changes that we have discussed in this article. If you make a start today, you will create a positive chain reaction that will have long-lasting benefits for you, your children and your children’s children – a legacy of good health that will be your best gift to the future.

Many countries in the world are facing a potential health crisis as the population ages. In North America, millions of Baby Boomers are turning sixty every day. Aging can bring with it many benefits such as increased wisdom and experience, but aging also increases the risk of serious health problems affecting the body and the brain.

One of the most serious health problems facing people as they get older is the increased risk of dementia. Dementia is a word used to cover a variety of different types of loss of brain function. The most well known type of dementia facing older people is Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease leads to an irreversible destruction of brain cells. At the same time, the types of neurotransmitters the brain needs in order to think and remember are also destroyed. Over a period of years, the patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease progresses from a state of mild forgetfulness to a profound loss of intellect. This is accompanied by an inability to think and remember. The sense of identity is lost. Forms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease are one of the main reasons why many senior citizens are unable to live independently.

At the present time, there is no known cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and unfortunately, there is no known cure. A variety of medications are currently prescribed to try slow down and offset some of the forgetfulness that Alzheimer’s causes. Many other potential medications for Alzheimer’s are in the experimental stages.

Although Alzheimer’s can’t be cured or prevented by medication at the present time, scientists who study brain aging have discovered that in many cases, the health of our aging brains can be improved by the life style choices we make.

The brain damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease appears to increase with the incidence of stroke and diabetes. We can reduce the chance of brain damage from Alzheimer’s by controlling our blood pressure to lower the risk of stroke. If we develop diabetes, we need to strictly control our blood sugar levels to minimize the damage that Alzheimer’s disease might cause.

Other types of lifestyle changes are associated with better brain health in old age. For example, people who continue to use their brains actively in old age are more likely to have good brain function. This may be because their brain cells keep making new connections with each other. To keep your brain active, take classes, read a lot, and take up new hobbies that are mentally challenging.

Physical exercise also appears to have an important effect in maintaining brain health in our later years. You don’t need to be running marathons to keep your brain cells healthy, but you should make a commitment to get regular exercise several times a week. If you choose a form of exercise you really enjoy, you will be much more likely to stick with the program.

There is some evidence that a diet that includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables may be protective against Alzheimer’s disease. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a lot of antioxidants that can help prevent free radical damage. More high quality omega 3 oils from sources such as flax seed and ocean fish may also be beneficial to brain cells.

Finally, people who have healthy brains in old age are likely to be those who have maintained good social and emotional connections with a variety of friends and family members. People who have little social contact and who are socially isolated are more likely to suffer a decline in their brain health.

Although at the present time, scientists can’t reverse the brain damage that Alzheimer’s causes, some simple and pleasant life style changes may help you successfully maintain a healthy brain, body and mind as you grow older.

Health practitioners are becoming increasingly alarmed at the growing problem of vegetarians and vegans who practice a restricted diet only to end up with a spectrum of malnutrition disorders. Where are these cases coming from, and who is convincing these people to slowly starve themselves to death? And the answers we will explore here aren’t too cheery.

Vegetarianism is practiced by individuals for either its perceived health reasons or by some groups for religious reasons. Not all vegetarians have the same dietary requirements; some are people who have decided to give up eating some or all meat. A vegan is the strictest kind of vegetarian, a person who also abstains from eating all types of animal products including cheese, milk, and eggs. Some vegetarians will eat items such as fish and eggs, and others will eat some types of dairy products such as milk or cheese.

However, regardless of the various motivations and practices, psychology has a name for vegetarians. “Orthorexia Nervosa” is a fixation on keeping a “righteous” diet, and it was first diagnosed by Colorado physician Dr. Steven Bratman in 1997. The term is derived from the Greek root word “ortho”, meaning straight and correct, and refers to a psychological syndrome where the patient’s food choices grow progressively narrower over time under the illusion of keeping the peace with either nature or a deity. The restrictions grow progressively narrower, until the person is convinced that anything outside of the handful of food groups they will eat is either poisonous or a sin. Nothing is allowed inside the body of a devout vegan which might be interpreted as a toxin. A vegan diet is an attempt to gain control over at least one simple aspect of a person’s otherwise ordinary life, and in this way relates to bulimia and anorexia.

Like anorexia and bulimia, the disease of veganism is a perpetual cycle. The patient cuts half the food pyramid from their diet, starts to feel sluggish, then is told that the reason they feel down is because they have more toxins in their body and need to cut out even more food groups. For the religious motivation, the rational is likewise that they are feeling the symptoms of starvation because they are not spiritually pure enough, and the only cure for it is – guess what – to starve even more.

Unlike other psychological disorders, extreme veganism has its own organization spurring its – there is no other way to say it – cult members to greater and greater denial, and to recruit others to do likewise. Some members of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, for one, publishes and distributes a body of literature which ranges far afield of merely treating animals ethically, to encouraging the radical vegan lifestyle. These tracts find their way into the hands of a target demographic, young teens, some of whom are impressionable enough to take them too seriously.

As a disclaimer, this is not meant to point the finger at all animal rights groups, all animal rights causes, or even all of PETA. Nor is it a blanket condemnation of all religions that have laws governing diet. But the facts as previously stated are nevertheless taking place.

Only a few of the dietary necessities that vegetarians typically fail to fulfill:

* Zinc, which is an important element needed for healthy skin and a healthy immune system.

*Calcium, which of course is not only needed to keep our bones strong but it is also needed for functioning of the nerves and muscles, as well as helping our blood to clot properly.

* Vitamin D, which is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous.

* Iron, a deficiency of which leads to anemia.

* Vitamin B-12, needed for blood formation and cell division within the body. A deficiency in this vitamin can cause severe and irreversible nerve damage.

* And of course, plain old protein is needed for the body to grow and repair itself.

This is not to say that studious supplementation and careful menu planning can not compensate for most of the gaps left by the extreme vegan diet. But as any medical professional knows, whether you’re talking about a vegan or a body-builder, the human body cannot survive indefinitely on protein powders, shakes, and pills. And the extreme vegans won’t even take to the protein powders (whey solids come from milk!), and are after all eventually mistrustful of the health and food industries in general.

The problem of extreme diet restrictions is one more challenge that the health profession faces. The real cure for this practice will be the eventual education of the public on proper nutrition. Unfortunately, given the past luck with convincing people that folk remedies and snake oil cures are quackery, the prospects don’t look good.

Each year, almost 44 million Americans experience or suffer from health problems. In fact, health problems are among the most common conditions affecting health today. It’s been said that most serious health problems are caused by complex imbalances in the brain’s chemical activity. They also believe environmental factors can play a part in triggering, or softening against, the beginning of mental illness.

Stress is simply a fact of nature forces from the outside world affecting the individual. The individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual as well as their environment. Stress is a normal physical response to actions that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger whether it’s real or imagined the body’s defenses kick into high rapid gear, or the stress response.

The stress responses you receive are the body’s way of defending you. When it’s working the right way, it helps you pay attention by staying focused, energetic, and alert. In other emergency situations, stress can save your life giving you extra strength to defend yourself, such as like slamming on your brakes to avoid a car accident.

In general, stress is related to both external and internal factors. External factors include the physical environment, including your job, your relationships with others, your home, and all the situations, challenges, and difficulties, your dealing with on an everyday basis. Internal factors determine your body’s ability to handle stress include your nutritional status, overall health and fitness levels, emotional well being and the amount of rest and sleep you get.

Stress can lead to serious health problems. Stress also have a lot of bad effects on you and your health, raising blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, speed up your aging process, pain of any kind, heart disease, digestive problems, sleep problems, depression, obesity, skin condition, and a lot more, are all symptoms that stress can cause. Stress drains our energy, weakens the adrenal glands, thyroid weakness, and skin concerns. Blemishes may appear around the chin; nails become brittle and peel, and your hair is dull and lifeless, and can eventually fall out.

Because of the widespread damage stress can cause, it’s very important to know your own limit. But just how much stress is too much is different from person to person. Some people can go with it, while others can completely crash. Some people even seem to thrive on the excitement and challenge of high stress lifestyle. Different people are affected more or less intensely, and in different ways. While stress affects everyone in an exclusive different way, there are certain factors that are in common.

By enhancing normal levels of various neurotransmitters such as dopamine, noradrenalin and serotonin, you should try NeuroCare. This is an exclusive herbal blend complex designed to cause an improvement in positive emotions. It also should help assist with calming and relaxing nerves, anxiety, excitability, irritability, nervous tension, headaches, and so on.
