Alcohol is capable of causing birth defects. Causing a child to suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome is really nothing short of child abuse and it lasts for life.
Fetal Alcohol syndrom is an invisible avalanche crashing down and overwhelming public resources. Patients with fetal alcohol syndrome typically have multiple handicaps and require special medical, educational, familial and community assistance. A baby born with FAS may be seriously handicapped and require a lifetime of special care. In the United States, about 1,200 children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome. It is the leading cause of mental retardation in this country. When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, she risks giving birth to a child who will pay the price- in mental and physical deficiencies- for his or her entire life. It is a pattern of mental and physical defects which develops in some unborn babies when the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy. People with FAS might have problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, hearing, or a combination of these. These problems often lead to difficulties in school and problems getting along with others.
Fetal alcohol syndrome includes a characteristic group of defects including small head and brain, facial abnormalities, and defects of other organs. Babies born with FAS tend to weigh less and be shorter than normal. This capability classifies it medically as a teratogen. Alcohol is now recognized as the leading teratogen to which the fetus is likely to be exposed. The syndrome is found in all racial and socio-economic groups. If you suspect that your child has FAS, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Early diagnosis reduces the risk of problems in life associated with FAS, including troubles at school, with substance abuse and with the law. There is no cure for FAS; however, with early identification and diagnosis, children with FAS can receive services that can help increase their potential.
Causes of Fetal alcohol syndrome
The common causes of Fetal alcohol syndrome include the following:
Use of alcohol during the pregnancy.
Many drugs.
Heart defects such as ventricular septal defect or atrial septal defect.
Women older than 30 years and/or those with a long history of alcohol consumption.
Symptoms of of Fetal alcohol syndrome
Some sign and symptoms related to of Fetal alcohol syndrome are as follows:
Poor socialization skills, such as difficulty building and maintaining friendships and relating to groups.
Poor coordination/fine motor skills.
Small head circumference.
Failure to thrive.
Growth, motor, and mental retardation.
Mental retardation and delayed development.
Slow physical growth before and after birth.
Incomplete development of genitalia.
Facial abnormalities, skeletal limb abnormalities, tremors (in the newborn infant), agitation and crying (in the newborn infant).
Treatment of Fetal alcohol syndrome
Here is list of the methods for treating Fetal alcohol syndrome:
Babies and children with alcohol-related damage often need developmental follow-up and, possibly, long-term treatment and care.
Pregnant alcoholic women should be involved in alcohol abuse rehabilitation programs and monitored closely throughout pregnancy.
If you’re an alcoholic, don’t get pregnant until you get help. Use birth control methods until you’re able to control your drinking.
Heart abnormalities may require surgery.
A child with FAS may need help with social skills and memory.

Ten years ago a Surfers Paradise manss life was dominated by heart disease and time was running out. Now he has been granted a new wife and baby son better health total happiness.

Peter Irwin from Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia, has much to be thankful for. Ten years ago he was depressed, ill and deeply unhappy. He suffered from both Dilated Cardiomyopathy and some Ischemic Heart Disease that was slowly but surely killing him. Told there was nothing more that could be done for him and with no hope of living beyond another two years he started to seek for someone or something that could give him better odds.

An internet search unearthed that adult stem cells can offer hope and help. Peter failed to get on to a clinical trial in his own country because he was too ill to meet their entry criteria and so he went to Bangkok in October 2005 thinking he had nothing to lose.

Within four months of a simple procedure at a Bangkok Heart Hospital Peter was feeling much better and far more optimistic. His cardiologist had to agree that on clinical tests his heart was performing far more efficiently. His life since then has continued to improve. He still has some health issues but they no longer dominate his life. The greatest improvement has been that he can enjoy a far better quality of life and has high expectations of a very positive future.

Adult stem cell therapy helped his heart strengthen, revascularize and repair and he made other dietary and lifestyle changes that he thinks have also benefited him. If you are beyond hope of treatment because of heart disease, all is not lost, he said. Almost every day research is being published that shows just how many seriously ill heart patients can be returned to a life they thought they had lost.

To cap off all his gains Peter and his new wife have just recently brought into the world a new son. “Stem cells made me reconsider my life. I now have the love and care of a new partner and a son whom I love more than I thought it possible to love. It is indeed a miracle and I am so grateful”, Peter said.

Looking at the family photographs he sent at the time of his son’s birth Peter looks the picture of health and happiness. One would never know that such a short time ago he faced a brief, painful, anxious, hopeless and debilitating future.

Jon Bradshaw writes constantly about the next to miraculous effects of adult stem cells.

Heart rate monitors have gotten quite a bit of attention within the world of health and exercise since they first became popular back in the mid 1990’s. And now these relatively simple devices that monitor and track each beat of the heart have been integrated into all sorts of exercise equipment like stationery bicycles and treadmills as well as being sold on their own.

Today there are a variety of heart rate monitors to choose from, many of which are rather trendy looking and serve dual purposes, making them the “must-have” gadget among many of the health conscious. Some models are worn with a wireless receiver portion on the wrist with the transmitter strapped around the chest while others are completely strapless and resemble a small wristwatch.

A heart monitor functions by receiving the electrical signal that is emitted by the heart as it beats. Every time the heart, which is a large muscle, expands and contracts the electrical signal is picked up by the monitor’s electrodes which are then transmitted to the receiver. For the ultimate in accuracy, the electrodes must be kept firmly against the skin at all times.

Basic models display the current heart rate, with the more elaborate units able to calculate and display the optimal average and maximum heart rates. If you are really serious about your exercise efforts, some models are even able to download and receive information via the internet, allowing you to print, store, and keep track of your personalized data on your home computer.

The heart rate can tell us a great deal about the body’s state of health and physical fitness and keeping track of this important function allows us to exercise at the appropriate and ideal level. As our endurance and strength build, both in the body’s muscle tissue and in the vital organs like the heart and lungs, the average heart rate also improves, giving us the ability to function better overall.

Many people who use heart monitors are trying to lose weight, increase their fitness levels, or merely want a clearer picture of their progress. Avoiding overexertion should be a top priority when exercising and heart rate monitors can help to do just that. Staying closely in tune with your body and learning to read its signals, especially when exercising, can be imperative to ensure that you are making the most of your workouts and enjoying optimal health.

Darrin Tebbe of Bodytronics is pleased to offer a wide selection of heart rate monitors along with other fitness electronics equipment. Visit us at Bodytronics to learn more.

Many people like to strengthen the bones and prevent osteoporosis by eating calcium tablets in daily life. However, according to the research in New Zealand, these tablets can not effectively improve the bones for the human body. They can even increase the risks of getting the heart disease for the aged.

According to the research, the risks of getting the heart disease among people of 40 years old can be increased by 30%. The various elements like sex and variety of tablets have been excluded. Thus, the positive functions of calcium tablets can be completely counteracted. Nowadays, more and more people like to take such tablets, so the harms can not be ignored.

The researchers agree that the tablets can increase the content of calcium in the blood and change the chemical substances in the blood so as to threaten the health of heart. They think that people who want to improve bones and prevent osteoporosis by eating calcium tablets should change their plan. Although more proofs are needed to prove the increasing risks of getting the heart disease or apoplexy caused by the intake of calcium tablets, it always takes much time and money for people to get the tablets. Therefore, it is unreasonable for people to supplement calcium by this way. There are also some shortcomings in the research. For example, the research does not study the effect of supplementing vitamin D and calcium at the same time. The relationship between the tablets and the heart disease has not been studied clearly.

At the same time, the experts advise people to absorb a moderate amount of calcium through the reasonable diet in daily life. They advise people to stopping supplementing the nutrient by taking the replenishers. People, especially the aged, should absorb calcium through the foods containing abundant mineral substances as far as possible. The risks of getting osteoporosis can be obtained by testing the density of bones inside the human body. If the risks are high, people should quit eating calcium tablets. Of course, there are some people who do not agree with these researchers. They think that people can absorb 1000 to 1500 milligrams of calcium each day from the food. However, if the intake amount is not enough, people can supplement the nutrient by taking the tablets. These tablets should be taken several times a day so as to maintain the normal content of the nutrient in the blood.

Mesothelioma is a cancer associated with asbestos exposure. Fortunately, it is very rare compared to other forms of cancer in the general population. Unfortunately, it has a very high mortality rate. In this article, we take a look at some common questions and answers regarding it.

Q: Why have some a difficult name?

As if being diagnosed with cancer isn’t bad enough, most people are more than a little frustrated that they can’t even pronounce the name of it. “Me..so..thee..lee..ohma” is not a name just conjured from the air. Instead, it gets its name from the part of the body where the cancer tends to manifest – the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a lining found in the chest cavity and abdomen. It surrounds most organs including the heart and lungs. The lining consists of two layers with a lubricant between them. When the heart beats or the lungs take in air, the mesothelium lets them move without damaging one another.

Q: Am I Going To Die?

Well, we all are going to die at some point. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and so could you. That being said, the first question is whether you have a benign or malignant form of the cancer. The benign version is, of course, not going to lead to fatality. Ah, but what about the malignant form.

A diagnosis of malignant Mesothelioma is often fatal, but not always. Approximately 9 percent of patients survive five years after being diagnosed. The key is to make it through the first 2 years. Most patients die during this period, but those that live longer usually survive.

Q: What Course of Treatment Is There?

The treatment course for Mesothelioma depends entirely on your specific condition. There are different stages of the cancer and each has its own typical treatments. In general, you can expect surgery to remove areas of cancerous growth including potentially a lung. You can also expect this to be combined with very aggressive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Mesothelioma is also one area where doctors are universally very aggressive. You will want to confer with a Mesothelioma specialist, and can expect them to recommend you participate in clinical trials of potential treatments that have not been approved by the FDA yet.

A Mesothelioma diagnosis was a death sentence 20 years ago. This is no longer the case. If you, a friend or loved one is diagnosed with it, be positive and aggressive in seeking treatment.

She ought to be dead, but adult stem cell therapy has ensured a California woman with Cardiomyopathy continues to live an active life without any further deterioration to her damaged heart.

Clara Chestnut from California has just become one of only a handful patients who have received her second treatment with adult stem cells for her failing heart. “I’ve been going downhill since 2000, with every year more of my heart being dead,” she said. “But after my first treatment in April 2006 my cardiologists have done a huge attitude shift and now recognize that ‘No change’ is a certificate of my wellbeing. Staying the same is terrific, so if it takes coming back every year I will do that.”

Like many heart patients Clara had experienced several heart attacks without knowing what they were. Her doctor concurred that at 59 the pains she experienced were probably arthritis, so she started carrying her purse on the other arm, but it made no difference. Then in 2000 she had two major heart attacks and started on the downhill slide. Specialists gave her 30days to live without a bypass and also told her she probably would not survive the surgery.

Clara got mad and searched until she found someone who could help her. “I wasn’t ready to die, and I knew that someone, somewhere, knew more than those people,” she said. Her new doctor gave her the first of seven stents and she felt “wonderful”. She read about singer Don Ho and his success story with adult stem cells, so did her research and in the face of her doctors’ opposition went to Bangkok to undergo a adult stem cell therapy. “I was most impressed with the professionalism of the doctors and the nursing staff. Everything went fine and the following February I returned to my specialist for a cardiogram. He told me nothing had changed, so I asked him ‘Would you go back to Bangkok if you were me?’ He said that he would, but that I didn’t have to leave the next morning! That is an enormous attitude change.”

People looking for hope and help, who want to feel better and be more active, are the most outspoken advocates of adult stem cell therapy. “I listen to myself and I feel anybody with any sense would listen to themselves and know it’s something they should do. They know how they are feeling. They know how wonderful it would be to feel better. I don’t see why anybody would be reluctant,” she said.

Jon Bradshaw writes constantly about the next to miraculous effects of adult stem cells.

Congestive heart failure patient, Douglas Rice from the U.S., ought to be dead. Instead he is leading a crusade to raise public awareness of the benefits of adult stem cell therapy.

From having three months to live in January of last year to being an outspoken and dedicated activist of the benefits of adult stem cell therapy, Douglas Rice, aged 61, is not to be trifled with. His mission is to reach the 500,000 American heart patients who will die in the next twelve months and tell them they can get their life back.

A Congestive Heart Failure patient, who also suffers from diabetes, Douglas was saved from a disease that kills some 1400 people every day, but he had to go into debt and travel to Bangkok to do what he should have been able to do in the U.S. “I used my own stem cells and a simple Angioplasty to have my life given back to me,” he said.

“These 500,000 heart patients do not make the mainstream press or feature significantly in magazines and politicians do not discuss the issue. The headlines are kept for car accidents and shooting tragedies. No one takes the time of day to pray for the hundreds of thousands – some very young and with families – who die needlessly,” he said.

He is angry at the endless squandering of public money into embryonic research that has swallowed up billions of dollars and produced not one effective treatment. “There is something that works now,” he said, “What does it take to make people realize that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? Adult stem cells are the last hope for many end-stage heart disease patients and the world needs to know about.”

“I’m a very lucky man to have found the answer rather than be in an urn on the fireplace. Those of us who care need to educate everyone, but I can’t do it on my own, and boy do I need your help!” he said.

He admits to being a dreamer but he is determined to do his best to save the lives of heart patients because he knows that help is available right now. His first step has been to set up a Website dedicated to providing information and education. He cannot believe that people will not want to get involved. “One day you, or a loved one, may be where I have been,” he said.

They offer a return to a more active, longer and healthier life to patients who have heart disease or PAD. They are derived from the patient’s own blood so cannot be rejected by the body.

“Can Elderberry supplements lower triglycerides?” Everyone searching for treatments to reduce triglyceride levels must have come across the possibility of Elderberry having an impact, directly or indirectly, on heart health.

Researching about Elderberry would tell you that this particular plant has been used for many years in alternative medicine. Exactly what does Elderberry have that makes it a preferred choice of many in the treatment of a wide range of diseases? Eldeberry boasts of intense antioxidant, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties. The small shrub, with its flowers and berries, is rich in bioflavonoids, too, boosting one’s immunity against certain diseases, ranging from the simple flu and colds to cancer.

Elderberry is not very common. Native to North America, only those in Asia, Europe and North Africa are able to enjoy its flowers and berries. Thankfully it now comes in supplement form, available worldwide. As such, you can be anywhere in the world and still be able to benefit from the healthy goodness of Elderberry.

It is not been made certain how can Elderberry supplements lower triglycerides and affect the condition of the heart. There are testimonies and studies linking Elderberry to cholesterol levels, though the effects are rather minimal, almost insignificant. Still its wide range of health-giving properties must contribute somehow to the overall health of the heart, making it a good choice when you have to deal with high cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

As it is, it would be a good idea to take other triglyceride-reducing means along with Elderberry supplements. For example, begin to have a healthier diet, one that’s composed of green and leafy vegetables, yellow vegetables, fish, fiber-rich foods, and none of the bad fat and the sugar.

The reason why so many people have triglyceride issues is because of bad eating habits. They’d rather choose the easy and more convenient route, which is to buy ready-to-eat foods that are deep fried in unhealthy fat, instead of preparing their own meals at home. Then again, they have to be made to understand that such food options do not help make their life better or healthier. In fact, eating fried foods everyday can cause your triglycerides to pool in your system, making you prone to a number of heart diseases.

Vegetables like squash, cauliflower, broccoli, Spinach, and lettuce are among vegetables identified to lower triglycerides as they are rich in essential vitamins and fiber. Fish contains Omega-3, the essential fatty acid that plays a major role in heart health.

Aside from eating healthy, one is also advised to exercise. Cardio exercises are particularly recommended as these would really get your body sweating out the calories and burning off the fat. However, cardio workouts are not advisable for everybody, so better consult with your attending physician first if you are planning to try cardio workouts.

The answer to the question, “can elderberry supplements lower triglycerides?” may not be a resounding yes, but nobody can deny the role of elderberry in the maintenance of general well being, the health of the heart, included.

Lifestyle factors are important. For example, studies have shown reduced cognitive decline amongst older people who walk regularly. By exercising for a fit body, you also benefit from improved blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, which improves mental acuity, balance and motor skills as well. Exercise also causes the release of “feel good hormones” or endorphins. Some depressed people benefit so much from exercise that they are able to forgo their antidepressants, which are sometimes the cause of memory problems. Another benefit of exercise was seen in a study where it was found that the brain produced significantly more of an important brain cell protein growth factor after exercise, increasing mental acuity and memory.

People who eat a lot of leafy green vegetables and eat fish at least once a week have also been found to show reduced cognitive decline with aging. Another important finding is that sugar can be a cause of memory decline. Studies have shown reduced blood supply to the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus, an area involved in memory formation, after a high sugar meal resulting in a blood sugar spike. This is a finding that has been seen in diabetics. It is therefore very important to watch your diet and to control diabetes.

Social factors can also be important. Older people who live with a spouse or other family members and who have a lot of human interactions tend to do better both in terms of physical health and cognition than those who are more isolated in old age. Adequate sleep is also important for maintaining mental clarity, acuity and memory. It may sound like old fashioned advice that your grandmother may have given, but it’s scientifically backed by extensive research. Weight control is another very important factor in maintaining a healthy brain and memory. New research has shown a strong link between obesity and cognitive and memory decline

Cognition is sensitive to a wide variety of nutritional factors, and modern nutritional science is uncovering that we can improve our mental powers effectively, and even powerfully, through a wide array of nutrients and supplements, including antioxidants, herbs, fats and other targeted dietary supplements.A November 2008 review in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association pointed to benefits of a variety of bioactive nutritional supplement ingredients (often called nutraceuticals) in slowing age-associated memory impairment. Vitamins B, C and E and the botanical brain boosters Ginkgo, Ginseng, Pomegranate, Alpha lipoic acid, rhodiola, Vinpocetine huperzine and acetyl-L-carnitine were found to be especially effective

The brain is not a separate organ from the rest of your body. How you treat your body also affects your mind. By exercising regularly and consistently for a fit body, by watching your diet and weight, and taking brain boosting neutraceuticals, you can enjoy a fit mind that has you functioning to your highest potential every single day.
