With today’s wealth of information and intensive research on the ill effects of cigarette smoking on the human body, you would expect a smoker to keep a safe distance from his regular nicotine fix and not touch it with a ten-foot pole. But a true cigarette smoker knows that it’s not easy to detach oneself from that so-called cancer stick.

Smoking cessation or the effort to quit tobacco smoking takes a great amount of self-discipline and will power because despite the known serious and deadly consequences cigarette smoking inflicts on the health of the smoker himself and the people around him (yes, let’s not even get into the devastating effects of second hand smoke because there are innumerable diseases that can be acquired from it), conquering nicotine addiction is a challenging feat on its own. I’m not sure what it is about human nature that makes people think they know better than the people putting out the various products we use, but the more time I spend on the internet working with various otc medications, the more I’m sure that very few people read the directions anymore. In the case of hair spray and toothpaste, this may not be dire, there for the most part, things should be used as directed – teeth whiteners, cold medicine, and especially smoking cessation aids like nicotine patches.
The strange thing about the general population’s disregard for directions is that they always seem to think more is better. The logic goes something like, “Well, if 30 minutes a day will gradually whiten my teeth, 2 hours a day will making them sparkling white by tomorrow!” It doesn’t take into account the fact that products are formulated to work a certain way for a reason. In our whitestrips example, that reason is because whitening teeth too fast will make the teeth very sensitive, damage the enamel and can even create uneven whitening with white spots.
However, using nicotine patches incorrectly can have longer-lasting and more dramatic side effects. Using two nicotine patches will not make it easier to quit smoking, because the purpose of nicotine patches is not to “cure” nicotine addiction. Instead, it’s an effective way to gradually lessen the nicotine cravings and to minimize withdrawal symptoms. In other words, adding more nicotine patches in an effort to quit faster will actually make it harder to quit because it will take longer to get the nicotine out of your system.

There seem to be two distinct aspects to smoking: habitual behaviour and nicotine addiction. Many smokers want to quit smoking altogether which means breaking away from both sides of the smoking problem. However, there are others who simply want to change how they smoke due to issues of family, etc. Let’s see how to do this…

Habitual smoking

The physical activity of smoking i.e. buying the packet, opening it, putting the cigarette in your mouth, lighting it, and taking that first inhalation of smoke, form a pattern of behaviour that is repeated many, many times. Patterns of behaviour when continued for a while become habits. Your mind and body absorb the pattern into your normal daily activity and relatively quickly it becomes normal. In fact, the pattern becomes so ingrained that your mind and body actively crave the activity to fulfil part of its basic needs. This is when the smoking habit has become a powerful dependency that is difficult to change. Continue reading ‘Quit Smoking – The 2 Sides Of Smoking’ »

The question of whether smoking is an addiction or simply a habitual activity can give rise to much heated debate. Many smokers believe that smoking is just a habit and that they can quit smoking at any time. Many medical experts and non-smokers however believe that smoking is an addiction and that for the vast majority of smokers it is not possible to quit smoking without outside help.

What is Addiction?

An addiction is usually an uncontrollable urge or desire to indulge in some activity which provides the person with a form of pleasure or stimulus that is difficult to replicate without using the substance or activity that causes the addiction. Addictions are known to come in all sorts of different guises. You can have substance addiction; the most well know are drugs and alcohol, and you can have activity addiction such as exercise or eating disorders. However, the activity addictions usually have some basis in substance addiction. For example, a person addicted to exercise may well be addicted to the chemicals, such as adrenalin, produced by the body as a result of the exercise.
