For Fosamax femur lawsuits, we need to know how long someone has been taking Fosamax because the longer someone has been using it the more likely the drug caused her atypical femur fracture. We assume that “taking” a drug means swallowing an oral tablet containing 5-70mg of Fosamax’s active ingredient, alendronate sodium. This is Fosamax’s most commonly prescribed form, as one might expect, because it’s simple for patients to self-administer. Unlike most drugs, though, the human body does not absorb alendronate sodium very easily. In fact, only 0.6-0.7% of the drug is ultimately absorbed, meaning more than 99% of the Fosamax you purchased was wasted. When doctors believe people truly need the drug, such as patients suffering bone degeneration during chemotherapy, they prescribe it in an intravenous (IV) form. While IVs are not something people can readily self-administer, they are much more effective delivery mechanisms.

More effective? Yes. More dangerous? We believe so. Medical experts documenting Fosamax-caused Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) frequently find that the patient received the IV form of the drug. For example, a Tribune-Star article reported on a woman whose doctor prescribed her IV Reclast (a bisphosphonate very similar to Fosamax) for minor osteoporosis in her upper thigh. After receiving only two injections in a two-year period, she developed ONJ. She had to have a few teeth in the back of her jaw pulled, but her jaw started healing afterwards. Novartis, the drug’s manufacturer, strenuously denied any connection between bisphosphonate use and ONJ, stating, “Based on best available scientific evidence, a causal relationship between osteonecrosis of the jaw and bisphosphonate therapy, or any individual therapy factor, has not been established.”

Whether people have taken Fosamax by IV or in tablets concerns us for two reasons. One, doctors sometimes over-prescribe bisphosphonates for minor osteoporosis. Two, while most researchers focus on people who have taken oral Fosamax for extended periods, people may have suffered femur fractures after only a handful of IV Fosamax injections in a shorter time period. Consequently, if you received Fosamax intravenously and were injured, you should contact the Rottenstein Law Group to see if you can obtain compensation from Merck in a Fosamax femur lawsuit.
