It is quite common for skin cancer to occur on the nose. This is because the nose is so easily and prominently exposed to the UV rays of the sun, hence a prime target for the disease skin cancer. Having the unsightly sores so prominently displayed can be a real issue for many people, if not all.

Like most cancer, the main cause of nose cancer is due to the excessive exposure to the sun. Our genetic material in skin cells can be altered by the suns UV rays, causing mutations. If you think sunlamps and tanning booths are safe then think again. They also generate UV rays that can seriously damage your skin and cause malignant cell mutations.

There are 3 most common types of skin cancers. They are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the malignant melanoma. The most common and least deadly is basal cell carcinoma. Melanoma is linked to excessive sun tanning. In fact, it appears that 1 blistering excessive sunburn during a persons childhood may twice as likely to increase his or her chances of developing melanoma later in life.

But the sun UV rays are not the only culprit for causing skin cancer. A weak immune system, certain types of inherited diseases or chronic skin injury could also be to blame.

Like all cancers, it is wise to seek treatment before it starts to spread to other parts of the body. Detecting the cancer early could mean life or death, so dont take it too lightly when you see a small tiny sore on your nose. As the nose cancer will increase in size, it is best to get surgery done as quickly as possible. It does not matter if you see a doctor, general physician or even a dermatologist, they will let you know of your options on available treatments.

Unless it is a large cancer or malignant melanoma, no surgery will be necessary. In cases like these, treatment will usually involve cutting it with a hot knife or liquid nitrogen will be applied on the infected area. But should surgery be required, it is usually done fast and easy.

Most doctors or dermatologist will go for the least invasive treatment possible, unless of course, surgery cannot be avoided. But whatever the treatment, having it treated is a definite must. Most people will try to delay going for a checkup in the hopes that the sore will disappear. Well, remember, if detected early, skin cancer can be treated, if delayed however, it might spread to other parts of the body, hence it could be deadly.

Pain is our body’s way of letting us know everything is not all right. Pain in the body can result from chronic conditions such as arthritis, or because of an injury. Often times, surgery is recommended to treat or remedy the situation. And while we may follow our doctor’s advice without asking too many questions, many times surgery isn’t necessary at all. In certain situations, time spent with a physical therapist can ease or even reverse your condition and make surgery completely unnecessary. Add to that the fact that for many people, going under the knife is frightening in itself, and it is easy to see why someone would seek out another option.

Physical therapists use their expertise of the body, and various pieces of physical therapy equipment to treat your injury. Every situation is different, and there are some cases where surgery is definitely the only way to go, but generally physical therapy will always provide some benefit.

Surgery will usually be necessary when tissues and muscles are torn to the point that they must be manually put back together to heal. Compound fractures are another injury that may require surgery in order to heal properly. Physical therapy can help you avoid surgery for conditions such as strains, sprains, some fractures, tendonitis, back pain and even dislocated shoulders. It is also helpful for some degenerative conditions like arthritis, disc degeneration and pain caused by postural problems.

Different types of physical therapy supplies and equipment are used by the therapist to heal your injury and help you avoid surgery. Types of therapy can include hydro therapy, electro therapy, heat and cold therapy, suspension aids, traction aids and different exercise equipment.

Hydro therapy immerses you in water in various tanks and tubs to help increase blood flow and take the resistance of gravity away. Another piece of physical therapy equipment used in hydro therapy is your typical whirlpool bath.

Electro therapy includes providing an electric current to muscles and nerves to help stimulate blood flow and tissue. Different muscle stimulation and ultrasound devices are used as part of treatment.

Physical therapy supplies used in heat and cold treatment include a paraffin wax bath, hot steam packs and cold packs. They are usually used in the management of swelling and/or pain in different joints and muscles.

Suspension and traction aids are heavy-duty looking pieces of equipment for patients who need to be immobilized to some degree for treatment to be effective.

There are many different techniques and treatment options available to the physical therapist to help you avoid surgery. Some valuable tips to help give you the best chance at avoiding surgery for your particular condition would be to always listen to your therapist and do any exercises they prescribe for when you are at home, and have an open mind. Some of the movements and exercises you will be doing will seem bizarre. Just have faith that your therapist knows what they are doing and you may be able to avoid that surgery after all.

All massage therapists should stay up to date with massage therapy equipment developments. Athletes rely on massage therapy to avoid complex injuries and innovative massage therapy supplies can make the difference.

Heart The heart in our human body is a muscular organ in all vertebrates responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions, or a similar structure in annelids, mollusks, and arthropods. The term cardiac means “related to the heart” and comes from the Greek word ‘kardia’, for “heart.”Heart of a vertebrate is composed of cardiac muscle, an involuntary muscle tissue which is found only within this organ. The average human heart, beating at 72 beats per minute, will beat approximately 2.5 billion times during a lifetime (about 66 years). It weighs on average 250 g to 300g in females and 300 g to 350 g in males. Cardiac surgery is the surgery on the heart and/or great vessels performed by a surgeon. Often, it is done to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (for example, coronary artery bypass grafting), correct congenital heart disease, or treat valvular heart disease created by various causes including endocarditis. These also include heart transplantation. Open heart surgery In this kind of surgery, the patient’s chest is opened and surgery is performed on the heart. The term “open” refers to the chest, not to the heart itself. The heart may or may not be opened depending on the particular type of surgery. Doctors realized the limitations of hypothermia – complex intracardiac repairs take more time and the patient needs blood flow to the body (and particularly the brain); the patient needs the function of the heart and lungs provided by an artificial method, hence the term cardiopulmonary bypass. Angioplasty This is the technique of mechanically widening a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel; typically as a result of atherosclerosis. In this procedure tightly folded balloons are passed into the narrowed locations and then inflated to a fixed size using water pressures some 75 to 500 times normal blood pressure (6 to 20 atmospheres). Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as ‘coronary angioplasty’ is a therapeutic procedure to treat the stenotic (narrowed) coronary arteries of the heart found in coronary heart disease. These stenotic segments are due to the build up of cholesterol-laden plaques that form due to atherosclerosis.

Science is always coming up with more and more ways to improve our health and our appearance; recently, there has been an influx of laser based treatments – laser hair removal, laser eye surgery and the subject of this article, fractional laser resurfacing.

It may sound like something that workmen do to improve the road surface, but laser resurfacing is really taking off within the cosmetic surgery arena.

What is Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is the use of a high energy laser beam directed to specific parts of the face. The aim of the treatment is to remove (or ‘burn off’) the top layer of skin, revealing fresh skin underneath.

There are actually two different types of laser resurfacing – ‘ablative’ and ‘non-ablative’.

Ablative laser resurfacing is the most frequently used type and involves the high powered laser being used to destroy the very top layer of skin to reveal the fresh pink layer below (known as the dermis). The surgeon will then use the laser at a lower power setting to heat this skin, thus encouraging the growth of healthy, wrinkle-free new skin.

Non-ablative laser resurfacing is the same except that it does not destroy any skin whatsoever; it only heats up the top layer of skin to encourage fresh skin growth.

Fractional laser resurfacing means that only a small part of the face is treated at one time. It can also be carried out on the entire facial region if the patient so desires.

Who Can Benefit from Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing can be beneficial to a range of different people from either gender. The most common purpose for having the treatment is the removal of wrinkles, chicken pock or acne scars, and to even out skin pigmentation. Whilst there are those who will pigeonhole the treatment as something that only the older generation has done, there are plenty of young people who have fractional laser resurfacing to help in the removal of unsightly scars or blemishes from the face. Because it is generally a cosmetic surgery rather than a medical one, it can be a fairly pricey endeavor. The exception to this is if a doctor decides that a scar or blemish is having a truly detrimental effect on a person’s physical or mental wellbeing.

What Are the Benefits of Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

The most clear cut benefits are the removal of fine lines, wrinkles and scars from the facial region. These can easily cause a person a great deal of embarrassment and can be very detrimental to their overall health. Fractional laser surgery can restore the self confidence that tends to disappear after the onset of serious wrinkles or scarring. Older people that opt for this procedure often feel much happier to have younger, fresher looking skin.

What Risks are Involved in Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

This procedure, like many others, is not without its pitfalls. There are a number of side effects that could occur during and following the operation. In fact, many people are shocked when they see themselves for the first time following this procedure – particularly those who have their entire face treated. This is because the skin generally reddens quite a lot, and can also blister and ‘ooze’. This is a natural part of the healing process and will disappear in good time; however it can be a surprise to some people expecting immediate results. During the procedure itself, it is possible that a patient may catch a skin infection. This is due to the revealing of such delicate new skin which is far more vulnerable to external factors than ‘tougher’ top layer skin. Scarring is rare but a possibility, and there have been reports of total or partial loss of skin pigmentation.

As with all cosmetic procedures, it is recommended to consider all of these risks and balance them with the perceived benefits. Try and seek the advice of a qualified medical professional before ‘taking the plunge’.

Fractional Laser Resurfacing: The Final Word

All cosmetic surgery comes hand in hand with risks and benefits. In the case of laser resurfacing, this is also true. On the one hand, laser resurfacing is a great way – and very successful in almost all cases – to look younger and/or remove scarring; however, it could also cause scarring if anything were to go wrong.

As with any decision worth making in life, the choice is yours – just make sure you have all the facts and come to an educated, well-rounded conclusion.

The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your health care provider. We encourage you to discuss any decisions about treatment or care with an appropriate health care provider.

You’ve suffered the pain and frustration of having a bad knee long enough. You and your doctor agree that the best solution for your situation is the have knee replacement surgery. Now your surgery date is approaching and you want to be fully prepared for the day. But are you ready for the after effects of the surgery? You must prepare for your rehabilitation, so that you can take advantage of your new knee as soon as possible. The longer you wait to get moving, the less positive your results will be. You can start your recovery right away by doing some simple stretches after knee replacement surgery.

Why stretching, you may ask? Well, you’re not going to be able to get out of the hospital bed and walk a 5K. That can be left for later down the recovery timeline. Doing some easy stretches after your knee replacement will get the new joint prepared for a later course of more intensive rehabilitation exercises. Stretching can be done without placing any weight on the knee, making it a good way to start your post-surgery recovery. Stretching takes just a few minutes, and you can do many simple stretches right in the comfort of your own home.

Before you leave the hospital, your caregivers will probably give you a long list of detailed instructions on how to take care of your new knee. How to do the basic stretches after a knee replacement should be on that list. Insist that your therapist show you exactly when and how to complete these stretches so that you can feel confident you will know what to do when you get home. When you wake up in the morning, you will want to do those stretches to get your day started in the right frame of mind. If you get your knee moving each day, slowly at first, you will be up and walking pain free in no time at all.

It’s true; you really can have a pain free joint, and doing stretches after knee replacement surgery is the way to get started on reaching that ultimate goal. Of course, before you start on any exercise regime you must consult closely with your doctor and your physical therapist. You don’t want to push yourself too fast, too quickly, only to find you have damaged the new knee. For more information on how to make a full recovery from your knee replacement surgery, check out http://www.knee-replacement-video.com.

Jerry Seaman is a two-time knee replacement patient and former state wrestling champion. He knows about knee replacements and the challenges you face. At age 65, just 8 weeks after his second knee replacement surgery Jerry is able to squat 205lbs for 20 reps, stand and balance on a basketball, hang upside down on a bar 12 feet off the ground, and has a full 135 degrees of flexion in his knee. He has developed a complete recovery plan which includes exercises for flexibility and strengthening, a diet program to support weight loss and improved muscle tone, and his unique and powerful Success Mind-set program. It’s all available on one simple CD. Find it on his site http://www.knee-replacement-video.com

Do you experience strange tingling sensations in your palms, thumbs, or middle fingers? Do you notice sharp tense in your wrists when you do certain movements? If this sounds familiar, you may have this disease.

This will ensure that your sutures don’t break.

However, it’s not a good idea to keep your hands totally immobilized. Be sure to spend a few minutes each day gently flexing your fingers and wrists to attending in circulation. Strengthening the muscles and tendons around the area will help the incision to heal. However, as you recover from your carpal tunnel release surgery, be sure not to tense yourself too much.
When searching for the main causes of joint replacement surgery, different types of arthritis come up time and again. If it’s Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis, these main types of arthritis are the leading causes for joint replacement surgery, mainly hip, knee or wrist.

Joint replacement surgery is performed when all other treatments have failed to help the patient and the pain has become intolerable, or he can no longer function normally on a daily basis. Patients reach this situation when the cartilage, which serves as a protective cushioning between two or more bones, becomes damaged and the tissues around the joint become inflamed. With time, the cartilage wears away, allowing the bones to rub against each other.

As mentioned, surgery is never the first option in case of joint arthritis. The patient will first be treated with pain medication, physiotherapy or special activity exercises. Only when these are no longer efficient, will the orthopedist bring up the surgical options.

The most common type of arthritis that leads to joint replacement surgery is Osteoarthritis. Also known as ‘degenerative arthritis’, osteoarthritis referrers to the degradation of the joints (mainly hip, knee, wrist and spine) and can cause them to swell up, become red, stiffen or become more tender. These symptoms usually appear gradually. Osteoarthritis is caused mainly by the aging process but can also be triggered by injury or obesity.

Another main cause for joint replacement surgery is Rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammation disease. This is an auto-immune disease mainly targeting the lining of the joints. This kind of arthritis usually causes stiffness and swelling while the inflamed lining can invade and damage bone and cartilage.

It is important to know that people live with arthritis and successfully manage the main with combined types of treatments. When it comes to rheumatoid arthritis, there are even encouraging statistics showing that small numbers of patients go into remission in the first stages of the disease. However, when symptoms start affecting the patient’s day-to-day life and keep him from functioning normally, it is recommended they undergoes surgery.

The term ‘Joint Replacement Surgery’ incorporates different types of surgery. The main types include knee and hip replacement but the term also referrers to wrist, ankle, foot, shoulder and elbow replacement surgery. The extent of your surgery will depend on the extent of the problem and severity of the arthritis.

In a hip replacement surgery, there is a total hip or partial hip replacement, also known as Hip Resurfacing, in which only part of the joint is replaced. When there is arthritis in the knee, if not severe the orthopedic may suggest a torn meniscus surgery or knee arthroscopy (relatively minor surgeries). If the arthritis is severe, a Partial Knee Replacement operation – also might be the solution. This less invasive knee replacement requires decreased healing time and is considered less painful. The total knee replacement includes the complete removal of the entire cartilage; the partial replacement removes only the damaged area of the cartilage. The rest of the joint replacement surgeries basically have similar options of partial and total joint removal and replacements.

When consulting your orthopedic specialist about surgery, it is important to not rush in to the operation without making sure you have tried all other non-surgical treatments, what type of procedure is recommended and why and how will this specific procedure help the problem.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is often associated with exposure to asbestos, often in a work environment. The disease is often associated with blue collar workers, but there have been some very notable deaths from the disease in the last 50 years.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, which is where it gets its name. The mesothelium is a lining found in the abdomen and chest cavity. It acts as protection for organs such as the heart and lungs, while also providing a friction control surface so that organs may move against each other without causing damage.

The number of people that have lost their life to Mesothelioma are many, but not a lot of them are famous. The disease is associated with asbestos exposure. This tends to occur in industrial areas such as power plants, oil refineries, paper mills, and shipyards. While commendable, most people working in these professions do not move on to fame and fortune. Still, a few names are extremely notable.

Steve McQueen was considered the man’s man. An actor and lover of racing, he was diagnosed in 1979 with Mesothelioma. His physicians felt the disease was so far along that treatment was impossible. McQueen refused to accept this and moved to Mexico to undergo experimental treatments. While there, he died of a heart attack on November 8, 1970 following one of his surgical treatments for the cancer.

Musician Warren Zevon was diagnosed with inoperable Mesothelioma in 2002. He spent the remaining year of his life recording his final album. Titled “The Wind”, it is a haunting rendition of his condition and experience. He passed away in Los Angeles on September 7, 2003.

The simple fact is every life is notable whether they are famous or not. Thousands have lost their lives to the effects of asbestos exposure and subsequent diagnoses of Mesothelioma. This doesn’t even count those that “merely” developed lung cancer and the debilitating asbestosis instead.

Thomas Ajava is with MesotheliomaInjuryTexas.com – where you find information and help on the long history of Mesothelioma injury in Texas.

Arthritis can be so painful that it puts a stop to your life and keeps you up at night. For extreme cases of arthritis in the hands where non-surgical treatments don’t work, hand surgery is an option. Here are the most common treatments.

Medication And Injections

Before trying hand surgery, your doctor will try a few non-surgical options. These include medications and injections. The aim of both is to cut down on swelling. Usually, medicine is used first and if it doesn’t produce results, the doctor will recommend injections. These contain anesthetics and steroids that work for as long as several weeks or months. Injections offer a long-lasting treatment but they can’t be used continually for long periods of time because of possible side effects.

Joint Replacement

In severe cases where surgical options are deemed appropriate, there are a number of different treatments. One is called joint replacement. This is a procedure that is often used successfully for knees and hips, but can also be used for hands. Replacement joints are made from plastic, ceramic or long-wearing metal parts. These are then inserted into key areas to allow maximum flexibility and the least amount of pain. This is a fairly new treatment and it’s hard to say exactly how effective it is. Not every surgeon is qualified to perform it. If you choose this method, make sure your surgeon is experienced and qualified.

Joint Reconstruction

Joint reconstruction is a similar treatment where joints are restructured using a variety of materials. Also like joint replacement, it tends to be done for hips and knees, but in recent years there has been a rise in the procedure’s popularity for hands. This is usually preferred for patients who are older or who live more sedentary lifestyles. Materials and techniques are constantly improving and this is making joint reconstruction a more viable option for many people.

Joint Fusion

Another is called joint fusion. In joint fusion, the arthritic surface is taken out and the bones of the joint are fused together. This stops the pain and fixes any deformity that might result from severe cases of arthritis. However, it should only be used in serious cases as a last resort. The reason is that it keeps the joint from moving anymore. You lose the pain of arthritis because the joint can no longer move. It’s not an ideal option for everyone.

Do You Need Hand Surgery?

Arthritis can be very bad or very light; how do you know if you need to see a surgeon? Since the aim of hand surgery is to reduce pain, that should be the main factor. As a general rule, if the pain keeps you up at night, you should seek treatment. And if non-surgical treatments such as medicine, therapy and injections don’t eliminate the pain, you should seek a qualified surgeon for one of the above treatments. Make sure your doctor is qualified and experience to perform in this area.

Cancer surgery: Physically removing cancer

The prospect of cancer surgery may make you feel anxious. Put your mind at ease by learning more about cancer surgery and how and why it’s used…..

How is cancer surgery used in treatment ?

Common reasons you might undergo cancer surgery include : -

* Cancer prevention : – If there’s reason to believe that you’ll develop cancer in certain tissues or organs, your doctor may recommend removing those tissues or organs before cancer develops. For example, if you have a genetic condition called familial polyposis….

How is cancer surgery traditionally performed ?

Traditionally, the primary purpose of cancer surgery is to cure your cancer by physically removing all of it from your body. The surgeon usually does this by cutting into your body and removing the cancer along with some surrounding tissue to ensure that all of the cancer is removed. Your surgeon may also remove some lymph nodes in the area to determine if the cancer has spread. This helps your doctor assess the chance of your being cured, as well as the need for any further treatment. ……

What other techniques are used in cancer surgery ?

Many other types of surgical methods for treating cancer and precancerous conditions exist, and investigators are always researching new methods.

Some common types of cancer surgery include : -

* Cryosurgery : – During this type of surgery, your doctor uses very cold material, such as liquid nitrogen spray or a cold probe, to freeze and destroy cancer cells or cells that may become cancerous, such as irregular cells in a woman’s cervix that could become cervical cancer……

What are the risks of cancer surgery ?

As with any surgery, cancer surgery does carry risks. What side effects you might experience after cancer surgery will depend on your specific surgery….
