Except in an emergency, you cannot be given a treatment or test without your “informed consent.” You must be informed of the risks and agree to the treatment. In a partnership, however, informed consent may not be enough. The real goal is shared decision-making, where you actively participate in every medical decision.

Why should you help make decisions with your doctor? Aren’t you paying him or her to know what to do? Well, the choices aren’t always black and white. With many health problems, there is more than one option. Consider these examples:

  • You have moderately high blood pressure (160/95). Your doctor says that exercise and diet might bring it down, but most people don’t succeed that way. Your doctor recommends that you start on medication to control it. You would rather try exercise and lose weight than take pills for the rest of your life. The best decision depends on your values.
  • Your three-year-old has a headache and a fever. The doctor says it’s probably nothing to worry about. Then you mention your hunch that it might be meningitis. Some testing may be appropriate.

Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating, there’s nothing like the impact of those three little words, “you have cancer.” I know this only too well as a 10-year survivor and as someone whose Mom, Dad, Aunts and Grandpa have battled with the disease.

At the time of my diagnosis I was shell shocked, as most of us are. I was even more confused by the variety of treatment choices offered me. Decisions about a lumpectomy or mastectomy, a TRAM flap or silicone or saline implants were all part of this challenging time.

While I’m a big proponent of having choice, after all, it is our body, it was one of the few times in my life where I would have loved to have passed off the decisions to someone else. But that wasn’t an option and so I made my own decision, after lots of reading and interviewing.

While no one had an issue with my choices, this isn’t always the case. I had a friend who chose alternative cancer treatments, to many of her friends dismay. My own Mom, after two brutual rounds of chemotherapy announced that she was done regardless of what her oncologist said. Her decision was incredibly upsetting to me, but as someone who had just gone through her own cancer journey, I felt strongly that the decision around her cancer treatment was hers to make.

In situations like these, what are the steps you should take to help the cancer patient through their treatment journey? The following nine tips will help you navigate this challenging time. Alcohol is capable of causing birth defects. Causing a child to suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome is really nothing short of child abuse and it lasts for life.
Fetal Alcohol syndrom is an invisible avalanche crashing down and overwhelming public resources. Patients with fetal alcohol syndrome typically have multiple handicaps and require special medical, educational, familial and community assistance. A baby born with FAS may be seriously handicapped and require a lifetime of special care. In the United States, about 1,200 children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome. It is the leading cause of mental retardation in this country. When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, she risks giving birth to a child who will pay the price- in mental and physical deficiencies- for his or her entire life. It is a pattern of mental and physical defects which develops in some unborn babies when the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy. People with FAS might have problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, hearing, or a combination of these. These problems often lead to difficulties in school and problems getting along with others.

Like all cancers, there is no permanent and full cure for cancer. After entering the period of remission, there are always risks of going into relapse and battling the few cells that were not affected by therapy. No one method works fully on ovarian cancer and so it requires a combination of varied ways to achieve a successful ovarian cancer treatment. These methods are of three kinds, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Along with medicines, these three can be used during different stages of cancer to produce results.

Close to every patient that suffers from ovarian cancer will undergo surgery during the process of treatment. Depending on which stage the cancer stands, surgery can be either limited to removing as many cells as possible to complete removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. This is known as a hysterectomy and gives a full chance of recovery with very little risk of relapse due to guaranteed removal of all tumorous tissue in the body. However, if the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries and uterus, then more invasive surgery would be required with a heavy dosage of drugs to ensure that no cells remain in the body. The removal of the womb and the lymph nodes of the body which have been affected by cancer is known as an oophorectomy. It is undertaken when trying to remove as much cancerous tissue from the body as possible. This form of ovarian cancer treatment works best with younger women and middle aged ones since their bodies can take heavy surgery without much trauma. Continue reading ‘Ovarian Cancer Treatment’ »

Gout is one of the most painful yet treatable forms of arthritis, but it’s often not treated properly. Today, it’s estimated that two to five million Americans have gout, with most male victims suffering a first gout attack between 40 and 50 years of age. Women develop gout later, in the years following menopause. With Americans living longer and growing stouter, both of which are linked to gout’s prevalence, it’s important that the disease be diagnosed promptly and accurately, and treated effectively, to prevent disability, joint damage, lost workdays, and diminished quality of life.

If I had been diagnosed with your cancer 20 years ago I would have accepted any treatment recommended by my doctors because after all they are the experts. However today that is not so and that’s because of one simple reason, knowledge. The study of cancer has taught me many facts which of course I was ignorant of back then. I have learnt why we only have those 3 treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, I have learnt of the ineffectiveness of those 3 treatments, I have learnt who controls the cancer industry and I have learnt there are other, better ways to overcome all cancers.

Now days being 20 years wiser if I was diagnosed with cancer I would apply a little common sense and ask myself a few questions, for instance why did I get cancer in the first place and if I get it surgically removed what’s going to stop it from growing back again since surgery doesn’t address that. Also does it make any sense to use nuclear radiation to burn it out or a poison as in chemotherapy to try and remove it which also won’t stop it coming back. People today accept those treatments because they believe they are the only ways to cure cancer.

One of the first facts I learnt about cancer is, when it is first diagnosed it is in its primary state and nobody ever dies from primary cancer. It’s secondary cancer, cancer that has shifted to another location that kills, so as long as it doesn’t spread I’m not going to die. To make sure my cancer doesn’t spread means addressing the root cause or the prime reason why it first appeared and not just remove the problem which is the unwanted growths and that’s all our orthodox medical system is doing.
