The major killers today are heart disease, stroke and cancer and the single biggest cause of these diseases is our unhealthy lifestyles. Recent studies have shown that healthy habits can extend lives and reduce disabilities in old age and good health habits include being able to spot a problem early enough to get it medically treated effectively. The following are the most important warning signs and symptoms we need to watch out for and take urgent action on:
Unexplained weight loss may signal diabetes, depression, chronic infections or in serious cases, cancer.
Chest pain with or without accompanying arm or jaw pain could be a signal of heart disease or even an impending heart attack.
Sudden intense headaches, specially in people over 50, could signal something serious like a tumor or a stroke.
Unexplained changes in bowel habits could signal ulcers, infections, inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.
Sudden paralysis, weakness or numbness in the face, arms or legs on one side of the body could be a warning of a stroke.
Loss of speech, slurring, trouble talking, understanding speech or blurring of vision may indicate a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
Confusion or disorientation could be warning signs of low blood sugar or head injury.
Flashing lights in someone who otherwise has normal vision could be a signal that the retina is becoming detached.
Fever of 99.5 degrees or more that persists for over a week may mean a serious illness or cancer.
Unusual bleeding or discharge in cough, urine, vomit or stool is a serious warning sign of cancer.
Nagging cough or hoarseness lasting more than a few weeks is a warning sign of cancer.
Dizziness, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath or vomiting are all warning signs of a heart attack.
Increased thirst or appetite could be a sign of diabetes.
Frequent skin infections could signal diabetes.
Some of these symptoms or warning signals may not seem serious enough to seek medical help but with the right education, we should know not to ignore any of them. For some that signal a stroke or heart attack, seek help immediately.
